Why
What's annoying about the Samsung is that it's actually a very good box, and had they bothered fixing the couple of bugs, it would easilly be the box of choice for FreeSatHD. I don't believe there is a fault-free box on the market, the SMT-S7800 might be the best of a bad bunch. |

The Humax is REALLY slow in the EPG, frustratingly slow, and when I evaluated, it was really buggy, it took about a minute for the EPG to display. I believe that last problem was partially fixed, but it was still like browsing in treacle. Pressing the schedule button followed by the red button has always produced an instant epg. Adding the custom firmware adds loads of extra capability including a PC remote control with macro capability, streaming video, remote internet access, recording non freesat channels in Freesat mode to just mention a few. Deffo not the best choice for me. The Samsung doesn't come close. |

Deffo not the best choice for me. The Samsung doesn't come close.I shouldn't have to remember workarounds to get the EPG working, and I don't care about any of that stuff you listed. I just want a freesat box that works, and isn't frustrating to use, and something that's as close to the "slickness" of the Sky+ box. The Samsung is as close to those goals as is achievable on Freesat+ (or at least it was, when I picked mine up, I don't know if the new Manhattan is any good...) The Samsung is WAY more intuitive and WAY faster to use, which I why I consider it superior, it excels in it's primary function. It's s shame Samsung haven't swept up the remaining bugs (but then neither have Humax). |

Clearly Samsung don't give a crap about the problems this model suffers from, and their lack of communication is shocking, so I decided to contact FreeSat and see what they can do...
Clearly neither company gives a crap about the Freesat platform. Perhaps they believe I am alone in my problems. If anyone else wants to fire FreeSat a email complaining about Samsungs lack of FreeSat support, then I encourage you to do so. http://www.freesat.co.uk/how-to/ask-an-expert I'm not that keen on shaming companies into supporting their customers, but in this case, with Samsung, it's entirely justified. |

It's just a Shame about the niggly firmware issues as this Samsung box is most defiantly the best freesat box on the market the layout the guide everything about it is great just wish Samsung would just sort a firmware update out that will easily resolves the minor problems

.Joking aside, I think you are right, without some pushing, Samsung will want all to forget that SMT-S7800 ever happen. Sad.

It seems there has been an update to the firmware.
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mo.../XEU-downloads 'Software V6.0.376 Resolved the issue with YouTube log-in. Resolved the issue with the number of media files listed. Improved the recordings. Note 1: Some users may experience schedule conflicts when recodring some regional programmes in series because of broadcast information. Samsung is wokring with Freesat to resolve this issue. Note 2: This includes major fixes or improvements, compared with V5.0.300 or V5.0.301.' |

' ). Deleting the other regions from the epg should stop it happening.

I've just tried to download the update to USB and update via the settings menu.
All I get is "Image not found on USB!" Any thoughts? |

I have updated via a USB - which took about a minute - there do seem to be some obvious changes.
- In the library you can see a '%' figure in the top right hand corner showing you how much space is left on the hard drive. - When you click on 'guide' the main TV picture sort of 'zooms' to its position in the Picture In Picture frame on the top left hand side of screen and has a banner beneath it showing what channel it is. - Navigation from one option to another now seems faster - The 'Pop' Kids TV channels now appear in their correct aspect ratio of 4:3 - thought this can be changed in the 'Settings' Menu - Still no ITV player Still have to check the You Tube login / playback from USB / connecting to PC Network and if more than Xvid/MP3/JPEG files types are now supported + lip sych issues I had noticed that BBC iPlayer lip synch issues seemed to have been sorted before this update. If all thse issues have been resolved then this box, which can be picked up for about £150 or so, would be a real bargain. |

Decreed,
no problems here - downloaded file to PC desktop and then moved it on to USB. Plugged USB into machine and followed instructions printed out from the Samsung site. Took about 2-3 mins to update. |

Done a bit of playing.
YouTube log-in and account works fine. Watching videos over network works fine with no lip synch issues (only tried Xvid files). MP3 files played fine too. Watched Xvid files from USB stick with no issues either. I have emailed Samsung to ask if there will be an 'over the air' update and also about the disappearance of the amamorphic widescreen on the 'Pop' channels. I was mistaken earlier and you cannot adjust the ratio in the box to get these channels back to 16:9 anamorphic. But all in all, a pretty good update so far. |

Good spot! Missed that one.
Funnily enough as I never thought Samsung would issue another firmware update I was going to take the unit back to Richer Sounds as a have a 5 year guarantee. Before this update the box clearly didn't do what Samsung claimed (and still doesn't have ITV Player) so I was going to pay the extra and upgrade to the new Humax G2 box which looks very nice. Looks like I will hang on to this until the full range of G2 boxes is released and all those bugs that the early adopters find are ironed out. |

One thing about this box that still annoys me is that when I power up the box it first goes from just 'blue light' on front to 'LED clock on front' and then another 'on' push to get the box fully working. I just want it to power fully up with one 'on' button push. If anyone has a solution to that problem I'd be very happy.
