Yep, I'm currently watching C4HD on mine. Always thought picture quality was excellent especially on HD. Response to remote very fast and I love the picture-in-picture on the guide.
Recording from the buffer is a great asset. Only problem I've had is a regular lock-up when starting a recorded programme. Not every time but enough to be annoying. Has anyone added a larger HDD ? Not looking forward to finding a replacement when the time finally comes ![]()

I've just dug my Sammy out of the loft now that my Sky sub is dead. Still going strong and does everything I want it to. Hopefully it won't cark it soon, haha!

Pic-of-innards
Came into possession of a SMT-S7800 pushing 5 years vintage and filthy inside and fan sticky, visual survey of the capacitors revealed none bulging or leaking despite age (nb internal power supply so extreme caution exercised even though disconnected from mains for over a day). Hdd in place is 500GB Seagate Pipeline HD .2 P/N: 9GW142 - 193. Outer case lid bent at back corner, looked like someone had tried opening it before - as previous post indicates, you have to remove the plastic card space liner before the lid can be slid off. On the underside of the box there is a hole with 'unlock' (iirc) embossed next to it, poke through this and push the plastic nib retaining the liner in place, liner is unlocked from nib can then be pulled out and lid removed. Will suffice for my needs although it's a downer having no archiving functionality built in, plus being able to play xvid is limiting when the commonest format (container?) seems to be mp4 nowadays. |

Although the Samsung hardware has been designed around mechanical drives, an ssd might be damaged gradually by incorrect wear levelling of the nand within. Might just be easier and simper to stick with a mechanical drive. It might even be possible to use dd or gdrescue to copy the existing data across for a seamless transition. That might be messy if changing size. I'd like to keep this unit running a bit longer. I don't want to spend ~300Euro on an equivalent modern Humax yet if I can. |
