As with many things there's a huge amount of products to choose from but I would certainly recommend reading a magazine such as What Video & TV. There are a number of different configurations you can have but you first need to know what sources will connect to your surround system.
If you just want to have DVDs in surround then there are many all in one packages that consist of a DVD player, 5 speakers and a subwoofer. If you want to have surround from a VCR, Sky or Freeview box, games console and DVD player then you need to look at a seperate amplifier. All your devices connect to the amplifier and the amplifier passes then sound on to the speakers. There is a half way house option where an amplifier and DVD are combined in to 1 box. There are also a number of ways devices can connect to an amplifier, either 2 phone plugs, digital electical or digital optical and there's also a number of technologies you need to be aware of such as Dolby Digtal (used on DVDs), DTS (used on some DVDs) and Dolby Surround, Pro Logic and Pro Logic 2 (used to give surround from VHS, Freeview and Sky boxes and games consoles.)
