I have read a number of comments (on DS and elsewhere) about Syco "palming Matt off" or "cutting their losses" by selling the 50% interest to Columbia. I don't know why made the approach (my guess would be Chris Briggs was instrumental) but the most important fact is that a small label like Syco has no power to palm anything off on Columbia - they don't sign acts that they don't want and they very rarely sign acts they don't see a long term future for - there are other Sonny labels that do that - which means they see something in Matt - the fact that it didn't happen straight away means (at least to me) they have taken the time to look at his potential (perhaps even the sketches he has produced for the album) and they think he's worth the investment. It's inevitable that Cher and 1D in particular are going to be compared to him - but whether they are successful or not really has no bearing on whether he is.
I've been looking out for this but RL has overtaken me - I know it's ridiculous but I am massively pleased with this - his own page alongside Bruce!!!
In all my Columbia ranting I forgot to say - great review Crabbie - I pretty much agreed with everything you said (except I really didn't like Mary). What is interesting is that Matt's reception seems to be getting better and better (I noticed the walesonline person said his was by far the best) which again bodes well for the future - it's important that the label believe he can front a tour - cos that's where the real money is
and I'm glad those who noticed my typo yesterday were amused
