Just started listening to all their old greatest hits. I actually think they are some of the catchiest songs ever and this greatest hits album is probably one of the best ive listened to from a band.

If you like Duran Duran. you'll probably like their deadly rivals Spandau Ballet who were just as good. Also try Heaven 17, their patchy chart performance belied a rather good band.

Check out the latest duran album All You Need Is Now. They've recaptured their early sound - but with a modern twist! Forget Spandau...

Just as good? They kick Duran across the floor.

I'm too young to remember the 80s (wasn't born until 1991) but my brothers and sisters have a lot of 80s music. Duran Duran were pants compared to several other 80s bands. How they ever got so popular is a mystery. It's not as if they were even much to look at. Only one of them was.

Forget Spandau? Listen to Duran Duran and forget music, lyrics, musicianship and vocal ability.

Recaptured their early sound? Woohoo! Now there's something to be proud of and happy about

I cannot believe nobody has mentioned Japan. The influence of Japan in everything early-Duran Duran verges on plagiarism and I say that as someone who thinks self-titled and Rio are brilliant.

Roxy Music, Ultravox (especially before they dropped the exclamation mark) and Culture Club are sort of similar in ways, but not totally.

When you asked if there were any bands that sounded like Duran Duran, I thought you meant contemporary bands, not other acts from the 80's. There are actually quite a few more current indie rock bands that are very influenced by DD. For example, the Killers, Franz Ferndinand and this group from NYC called Stellastar.
A lot of the 80's bands mentioned here like Spandau Ballet and Culture Club while great musically sound nothing like DD. They only thing they have in common is they were successful in the 80's and had a strong fashion sense.

Sorry, Roxy again, not Duran Duran.

Spandau were good, very good, and with possibly a stronger lead singer .... but they were inconsistent.

And of course Duran never did a Spandau cover, whereas Tony Hadley covered Duran :

And didn't really do it justice .....

Old thread but have to put my pennies worth in...

Sorry, there's no comparison. The only thing spandau and duran have in common is that they were top of their game in the early eighties. That's where it stops.

Duran Duran have never stopped writing and performing. Sure they have released duff albums along the way, line-ups have changed and their popularity has waned. But that is true for any band that appealed to 'teeny boppers'. The truth is Duran enjoy what they do and that's why they're still here banging out albums. They're currently working with Chic's Nile Rodgers and Mark Ronson on new material to be released in 2015. Those of you who know their music will realise that Nile worked on Duran Duran's 1986 album, Notorious, as a producer. Pure funk, pure class.

Whenever I think of Spandau I think 'True'. Of course there were other hits but when a band have not been exactly prolific in reinventing themselves, like Duran Duran have, that's what happens. They become typecast and that's not good for an artist/performer. If I think of Duran Duran now I think ' Ordinary World', which was released in 1993. How many eighties artists can you name that had a #6 U.K. hit in the 90's? We all know the likes of Rio, Save A Prayer, The Reflex, Wild Boys etc etc which are / will be timeless classics. But the pension is important so you have to top it up and you can't keep relying on the back catalogue, which Spandau have been doing until late. Apparently they're working on a new album. Too little too late. It will crash and burn I'm afraid, because Spandau are a band who do reunions every now and again to put a little more money in the coffers. No one born in the 00's knows who Spandau is. On the other hand you have Duran who only last night opened for the presentation of Mazda's 2016 MX5 Roadster.

It's all about looking forward, never giving up, the desire to be an innovator, reinvention.
Put simply, that's what Duran Duran are good at. There are a few artists still around from the eighties who are probably not as successful in sales but are writing critically acclaimed albums and continually raise the bar. In that clutch I can name Simple Minds, Visage, Ultravox and OMD. Spandau Ballet don't figure anywhere in my appraisals.

So true, funny how it seems but Duran Duran, like it or not, are really very very good at what they do. Practise makes perfect. Credit where it's due....

Japan were way above both Duran Duran and especially SpandauBallet. If you like Duran Duran you'll almost certainly like both Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Quiet Life by Japan and instantly appreciate how they were in a different league altogether. David Sylvian's voice does sound similar to Bryan Ferry at times, but you will struggle to find any shared musical influences. Tin Drum is a superb album but might be rather challenging for Duran Duran fans.

I own Tin Drum, and I'm a big fan of Japan. David Sylvian's vocals sends shivers down my spine to this day. Ghosts is an incredibly beautifully, haunting tune. But Japan stopped in the early eighties and that's good for me because the early eighties was all about the synth and Japan were brilliant at it. Duran however, are doing completely different things now because they have to. Le Bon's vocal has matured and the band can jam on a par with Blondie at gigs nowadays. Roxy is on my list as well!

I'm somewhat concerned about the pro-Spandau bias in this thread so just wanted to say:

DURANNIE 4 EVA
SPANDETTES NEVA.

I thank you.

Even the name 'spandau ballet' doesn't work in the present day. Got to admit Tony Hadley is the most unconvincing looking frontman of a band! At least Duran get nods in soaps, adverts and movies. June Whitfield even wore a duran t shirt in the recent series of Abfab!! That's fashionable lol

If you like catchy 80's sounding musicians try listening to Hurts. Their first album Happiness really reminds me of Duran Duran - probably why I like both bands. Their song Stay sort of reminds me of a cross between Say a Prayer and Rule the World by Take That (don't know why )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nP3XB7hrFo

Their second album Exile still sounds quite 80's sounding in parts, but is a lot darker. But I often think their song Blind from that one sounds sort of like Duran Duran stuff. I won't post the video because it's fairly explicit and might offend lol
