It is not sympathy it is recognition..Who knows they may have travelled miles just to see him in the final as well as it being their 40th ann. Nice for him to mention them.
If he'd said: 'It's my nan and grandad's wedding anniversary, 40 years they've been together but even all the pain they've been through, like losing their jobs and houses, has kept them together. If I win I'm going to help them out so much.', then yes, it's sympathy .

OP needs to get a grip - it was a nice gesture, good on him to think of them when he must have had so much else in his mind.

Exactly. It was a funny time to bring up that you've got dear old relatives in the audience who you're 'doing it for' right before the lines are opened.

I thought ITV was wanting you to vote for Sam, because most of the time when the cameras turned on the audience, that row of Sam supports in blue were on

Hi, in the spirit of this being an open forum, genuine question: Why would ITV want Sam to win? If [and I really don't think this is the case] they wanted anyone to win it would be Laura, then Chloe as the girls would be far more suitable employees for ITV
If I was going to accuse any of the final 3 of using elderly relatives in the audience to get "sympathy votes" I'd pick Chloe - imagine having those two as your Mum and Dad !!! Poor girl. She has my sympathy!!!

Wonder if having to see them week in week out put some people off Chloe!
