Okay, quick question. When I renewed my contract with Orange, I didn't want a new handset. They gave me a good deal but said it was easier to do this deal if they sent me a cheap handset anyway. Stupid, I thought, but nevertheless, I was sent a Nokia 2730. They told me to do nothing with it unless I wanted to use it as part of my contract. This was a few months ago.

I now find myself in need of a cheap PAYG phone, just for emergencies, when I'm out somewhere and I don't want to risk damaging my iPhone. Can I just stick a PAYG SIM in this Nokia, or will it already be registered to my account? I can't see the point of getting a new cheapo phone when there's one sitting here. Or am I best to call Orange and try to sort it with them?

Yeah you should be able to put in a PAYG SIM from the same network (Orange) and it should work no problem.

Thanks, that's what I thought - it'll be locked to the network but okay for any SIM from that network. Now, how do I go about getting an Orange PAYG SIM? Presumably I walk into an Orange shop or do it online. I'm sure I can work that part out!

You should be able to pick one up in most phone shops. Presumable they would be free from an Orange shop. Some newsagents even sell them preloaded with some credit I think. You could also order online at £0.97p each http://shop.orange.co.uk/mobile-phon.../pay-as-you-go

edit: Come to think of it - I'm fairly certain those cheapo Nokias are very simple to unlock - Any of the phone kiosks on the high street should be able to do it for a few quid. Then you can use with any SIM from any network.

Thanks. I'm happy to put an Orange SIM in there because, as I said, it's just for emergencies. If I had cause to use it, I wouldn't be too worried about the cost!
