They are theoretically capable of more, I managed to browse a few bits of the BBC website on one occasion, following an error message when trying to play something.

What exactly are the IPTV services chrisy?

Also, travel channel works fine but my Classic movies aren't working yet, should it be?

The MHEG-IC channels are the ones on the ordinary Freeview EPG from Channel 110. It is also used by the BBC for the "broadcast" version of the iPlayer on FVHD although none of the current boxes appear to use it to access it as the Beeb insist that the box has passed the post April 2010 testing procedure.

Well I haven't came across any problems with the Beta software, how about you guys?

That being the case, hopefully we should be all be issued with the iplayer software soon then.

I wish I had all the catch up service like ITV player etc, so been looking at the You View and it seems great .........if it ever gets released!!

Apparently there are quite a number of things that need fixing. A full release may be further away than you expect.

Oh. I thought the HD/SD problem was the only fault and it had been fixed. What other problems are there?

The radio audio problem mentioned earlier
Buffering glitches
HD scaling
iPlayer scaling
Forward two back one

They are the only ones I know of off the top of my head. Peter told me there were "a million" issues but I think he may have been exaggerating slightly Even those five might take a long time to fix.

Went shopping in Tesco yesterday, they had the "A" model on sale, currently selling for £70. They also had some Technika tv's as well, wonder what differences there might be between the software in the boxes compared to the tvs?

There is no new version that has been released generally, but you can get a beta version by submitting a form on the Channel Zero website, this enables access to iPlayer, which is wonderful

The box does not and will not support these services.

That's fine, you will get the latest version as soon as is released if you don't want to try the beta version.

My local store (Surrey Quays, London) has the HY on its shelves for £39.97 complete with printed shelf price label so it looks like Tesco have put them back to the more or less standard price after the post-sales increase. No doubt there will be "reduced from" apparent special offers now they have been advertised for the legal minimum period.

The link is here -> http://www.ch-zero.tv/feedback

In the field "Do you access Channel Zero? If so, what box do you use?", put STBHDIS2010.

In the field "Comment", request the latest software.

They usually reply within 48 hours, with an email + attached file. You need to follow the instructions and put the file onto a USB memory stick.

Chris.

Here's a suggestion. Try reading the bloody thread first before getting others to repeat information that has already been given!

To be fair, the thread does run to 41 pages!

Tesco Clearing HD Boxes for £30

This is the E - Mail I got back

Josh thank you for your message.

There is a release that will enable BBC iPlayer and some other services due sometime in the next few weeks, however if you would like an advance copy, you need to install the attached version of the software. The iPlayer is good to go, there are some other services coming that are in various states of disarray, please don’t judge these yet as the people behind them are still working on them.

Some instructions are below.

We would be very interested in hearing about your experiences so we have set up a “beta” email account that I will be monitoring and responding to if you have issues or indeed any feedback.

I would be grateful if you didn’t distribute this further as I’m trying to keep this trial to those who have been interested enough to contact me.

Regards

Peter

Installing the beta test software

Unzip the attached file on to the root e.g. F:\ of a USB drive. This will create a folder called HYLAB_7105 on that drive containing the firmware required for the upgrade.

Remove power from the STB.

Insert the USB memory device in to the USB slot on the rear of the set top box.

Restore power to the set top box WHILST pressing and holding the menu button on the front panel until you see USB appear on the front panel.

The updated BETA software will now be installed automatically. This will take a few minutes.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO NOT REMOVE THE USB DEVICE OR REMOVE POWER TO THE BOX UNTIL THE UPDATE IS COMPLETE AND THE BOX GOES IN TO STANDBY.

When the update is complete the box will reboot and go in to a standby state indicated by STBY in the front panel.

Wake-up (switch on) the box from standby and re-tune the box as per instructions on the screen.

Connecting to the internet

To use the BBC iPlayer software the set top box must be connected to the internet.

The only connectivity that is support is Ethernet. Use an Ethernet cable to connect the set top box to your local router or use a Homeplug or Powerline solution if appropriate. There is currently no support for Wifi.

The box is automatically enabled to use DHCP to acquire a local IP address from your router. If DHCP is not enabled you can set the IP address and mask manually using the menu>install>Ethernet option.

You can check that the IP connection has been established. Use ‘menu’ from the remote and then ‘install’ > ’Ethernet’. If the IP address is anything other than 0.0.0.0 then the box has acquired a local IP address.

Downloading the iPlayer software

This will happen automatically once the IP connection has been established. It is quite a big download and will take a few minutes (4-5 minutes), please be patient.

When the single red LED to the right of the display turns from red to amber or green the download will be complete.

Accessing iPlayer

This will be available from the Channel Zero home page. You can access Channel Zero by pressing the Trove key (next to the heart) on the remote control or by selecting Channel Zero from the first page of the EPG.

Select the iPlayer button and iPlayer will load.

iPlayer supports both standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD) video playback.

iPlayer SD video playback requires a consistent bit rate of 1.5Mbit/s and a full HD service requires 2.8Mbit/s. If you are seeing problems buffering you would be advised to check your download speed using a commercial speed test application.

Known problems

None

Feedback

If you experience problems with any aspect of the installation or operation of the service please contact our helpdesk via email to beta@electratv.com. We will respond as quickly as possible.

We are interested in any and all feedback you may have. Good or bad we want to hear. The more you send in the better was can make the completed product.

Re-instating the current officially released software

If at any time you wish to discontinue with the BETA test you simply need to re-instate the latest current approved version of the software available on the support page www.ch-zero.tv/support. Download the software and follow the instructions.

Interestingly Tesco have just started delivering their Blinkbox service via the internet - the link is from the front page of their main web site. Maybe not a coincidence that the message from Peter includes the bold section?

Incidentally, I requested the latest release and got a response within the hour. Anybody recommend the brand/type of USB stick that works well? Last time I tried I found my trusty SD card reader I used before was duff and went through a selection of sticks not finding one that worked (and yes I did format them properly)

Update:

Absolutely no problem with the first stick I tried again after I realised that the very early version Peter had sent me before Christmas was not in a HYLAB folder so was not recognised. That confirms what happened when I updated to the 0161 software last May, The Technika is a lot easier and less frustrating to update than my Humax HD Fox T2 which is incredibly fussy about the USB device it will talk to.

Yes, the Humax HD Fox T2 is fussy about USB Sticks, that is why I got one from the Computeractive Magazine and it works a treat, if I use any other USB Stick,
it will not work after formatting it, this Computeractive USB Stick did not need formatting at all, I use this to update all of my boxes, the Humax HD Fox T2, the TVonics HD500
and the Tesco Tecknika IS2010 Freeview HD box

The bold section is no different other than the date from what was in the email I received with the beta firmware at the end of December:

"There is a release that will enable BBC iPlayer and some other services due in January, however if you would like an advance copy, you need to install the attached version of the software.
