I have a kitten who will be six months old next week. She's a mix breed (not sure which ones). Her mum lived on a farm and her dad was feral.

Anyway, we thought it best at the time to just get one kitten, but have now reconsidered as we'd like her to have a little friend to interact with.

I've looked online and understand the gradual introduction is the best way to do it, give both kittens items with the other ones smell etc.

My only big concern is that Skye, our current kitten, seems to be quite an attention seeker. When me and my OH are in bed, she tries to crawl between us and wants to be the one we both focus on. Likewise, even if we're sitting closely on the couch, she'll come up and try and take the attention.

On the flip side, she is quite independent when she wants to be. Sometimes she'd prefer to lie alone than bother with either of us.

Have any of you got any experience with this kind of thing? Did it work? The last thing we want to do is get a little one then have to give it away again.

I first started with kado the took in guinness. Then i got a lovely kitten called simon they took too him straight away. A few cats later i got lucky and simon hated him for about 2 wks but then he was fine. I am sure your kitten will be fine but do it slowly dont execpt miracles at once they might play fight at a young age. Also is you cat neutered at all.

She's not spayed yet. She's had all the necessary injections and we enquired about the procedure, but our vet is unwilling to do it until she's a bit bigger. She's the right weight for her height and built - but she's just small - so they want her to gain a few kilos.

Luckily for us, she's not given us any major problems or went into season.

If your get a male she should be speyed before hand. How much does she weigh. The vet would spey at around 2kgs. My last female who i though was under was over by a half a kgs. She was fine. she is now nine months old and is a little sod. she started calling at around 7 months so she had too be done as it drove us nuts

She's only 1.35kg at last weigh which was around three weeks ago.
She's got such an athletic build. Very lean and full of energy which obviously is helping her burn off the effects of the big appetite she has.

Our vet wanted her to be a minimum of 1.5kg before doing anything to her.

Wow she is tiny but you can get tiny cats. My diamond was speyed in feb. I would say personaly 2kgs is an ideal weight. with her being tiny she might like you say not come into heat till later on. I have diamonds mum, sisters brother and grandma. They all came into heat at around 6-8 months and didnt i know it. Only got diamonds brothers 2 neuter now they wasnt very well when i took them with diamond and they refused. Have you got any pics of your kitty i would love too see one

I never once worried about introducing them. I plonked them down and left them to it. I completely ignored any fuss or hissing. They live in perfect harmony.

I'm sure all the pet psychologists will be along in a moment to tell me why this is all wrong but in my experience it is only an issue if you let it be, act relaxed and the pets will follow suit.

I lived on a small holding as a child and my parents bred bulldogs and siamese cats, just before anyone tells me that I have 'limited' experience.

Re spaying, I too was advised some years ago not to have my kitten spayed as she was physically too small. The vet told me to wait till she came into season and then spay her right away. If any vet ever tells you this, change your vet. He spayed my kitten in season at 6 and a half months old and she died.

I have since had two vets who have told me the kitten's weight is not particularly important, and they should be spayed by 6 months regardless of their weight or you risk them coming into season. I have had two small Burmese girls who were both spayed at 5 months with no problems. Some rescue centres spay even earlier than this.

She is probably young enough to accept a younger kitten (once she is spayed). She may love a new playmate, she may merely tolerate him (better if it's a 'him') or she may hate him on sight, there is no way of knowing unless you try it. The sooner you do it, the more likely she is to be happy about it, before she gets too used to being on her own.
