o2 are now offering 12 month contracts for people who upgrade. Anyone upgraded in the last day or 2? any one know what the 12 month tariffs are like?

There's a big thread O2's new tariffs already... The 12 month upgrade option offers the same tariffs as the 18 month new customer ones just with the shorter minimum term.

Bear in mind Ofcom have ruled that all the networks will have to have 12 month contracts for new customers by end May. Vodafone have them already, presumably the other networks are waiting until nearer the deadline.
If you were looking for 12 months maybe worth waiting a bit to have more choice? |

The handsets are also significantly more expensive on 12 month contracts. If you want a decent phone you wont get it free or cheap on anything but the top tariff

So the networks could keep on offering 18 and 24 month contracts with handsets and 30 day and 12 month contracts on sim only if they wanted. |

Remember though, all of the networks already offer 12 month contracts. On SIM ONLY. Nothing in the European regulations mentioned they had to be contracts with handsets.
So the networks could keep on offering 18 and 24 month contracts with handsets and 30 day and 12 month contracts on sim only if they wanted. Ofcom said at the time "Under it, contract lengths must not exceed 24 months and consumers should have the option to subscribe to a 12 month contract." |

I was look at the SE Arc on voda and owning it over 12 months on a £40 a month contract is nearly £200 cheaper than a 24 month |

even though the initial phone prices are higher, the overall ownership of the phone over the 12 months is cheaper.

Yes, however remember the reason it is cheaper is because you've got a lower minimum term. If you decided to keep the 12 month deal for 24 months then you'd be worse off...

How does it work out if you switch down to an equivalent sim-only for the next 12 months?

Yeah that would be interesting to know. I've a sim eligible to upgrade so might crunch some numbers if I get chance. Would also be interesting to compare the cost of first year ownership between the 12 month and 18/24 months to see the difference
300 mins + unlimited texts + 500mb = £30 @24 months or £35 @12 months. 600 mins + unlimited texts + 500mb = £35 @24 months or £40 @12 months. But at 24 months there's £5 network discounts + (usually) stronger proposition from the retailer. So take the Desire as an example - 24 months/free Desire/300 mins/unlimited texts/500 mb = £25/month with network discount + £120 cashback from retailer Total ownership = £505 or £21/month. 1st year=£252 18 months/free Desire/300 mins/unlimited texts/500 mb = £35/month + 9 months free Total ownership = £315 or £17.50/month. 1st year=£210 12 months/free Desire/300 mins/unlimited texts/500 mb = £35/month with 3 months free. Total ownership = £315 or £26.25/month. 1st year = £315 There's better deals on other networks at 18/24 months, eg on Orange same would cost £350/£14 a month over 24 months. Pays your money and takes your choice ![]() Cheers, Jon |
