I tried to google this information, but the found links were not very helpful, it's hard to find an overview. What are the speeds of various network types and what do the abbreviations stand for? I saw G, 3G, E, H on my phone. Thanks.

G = GPRS, basic 2G internet speed
E = EDGE slightly faster 2G speed
3G = 3G internet speed upto 384Kbps
H = HSDPA speed upto 7.2Mb/s (or more!)

That's a good thing, currently the best you can hope for is H. H+ will be along very soon.

2G was WAP. GPRS is 2.5G. EDGE is 2.75G (kind of came along in this country after 3G strangely enough). 3G is 3G. H is 3.5G. HSPA+ (a slightly faster H), we could call 3.75G

True 4G is LTE where speeds will be in the tens of megabits (ignoring coverage issues and congestion). WiMAX could maybe also be called 4G but won't get widespread adoption in this country.
