Yes you can. You need to download and install iTunes before you can activate and use a brand new iPod, iPad, iPhone etc anyway.

Hi, thanks for replies so far, this maybe a dumb question but I’ll ask anyway. it says on software description on apple 64-bit iTunes webpage "Sync with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 4.3". does this mean i would need to uninstall itunes and install a new version of itunes when iOS 5. Something comes out.

thanks

iTunes will handle updates for you.

When you start iTunes it will check to see if an iTunes update is available and if so will ask you if you want to update your software.

Simiarly, when you connect your iDevice, iTunes will check if an update is available for the device and if so ask you if you want to update the device to the new iOS.

imo, it's about as user friendly as you can get.

You can start loading your cd's on, downloading apps (free ones incase you should change your mind about which phone you get ) too ready for when you get your phone.
