Strange Budgie Deaths
Bryan Spink
03-04-2011
Our two budgies were fine this afternoon but I've just found them BOTH dead at the bottom of the cage.

There was a thunder storm about 1/2 an hour ago and they have managed to eat their way through a complete sees stick since this morning. I don't know wether either of these as anything to do with it.

Oh dear! How awful for you! So sorry to hear of your loss. Were they nervous budgies? I have one myself and loud noises unsettle her.

Budgies are also notorious for having heart problems if frightened, so it could be that your little birds were spooked by thunder and/or lightning and their hearts gave out.

I don't think you'll get answers unless you have a post mortem done though.

Febreeze used in the house kills birds

It doesn't always kill birds, it's certainly not good for them, neither are most unnatural things that smell, along with fumes from teflon pans.

OP: I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. It's never nice to lose a pet.

It's worth investigating how they died, and make double sure that you don't have a gas leak!

Both my budgies died on the same day a couple of years ago. They were perfectly healthy little boys, then I returned from work one day to find them lying on their backs in perfect symmetry at the bottom of the cage. Still can't explain it

I had a similar thing with my chicken yesterday. She was fine and dandy on sunday and enjoying her little self. They yesterday she was dead in her house.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with her on sunday at all.

I was a little upset to be honest as she was my fav chicken and we would enjoy many cuddles.

There's no gas leak and we put a new CO monitor in the room they were in only last week.

I never use any cleaning products in the living room where my budgie is. I use white vinegar and lemon juice as some of these solutions can be REALLY toxic for a little bird. As another poster stated, so can the non-stick coating on pans which is released as they cook.

I suppose the thing is with sudden deaths, at least the birds seem to be in good health up until they go. It's best for them but traumatic and sad for us.
