Foxsat HDR spontaneous reboot
beeman
03-04-2011
I've had the HDR for 2 weeks and only done a few recordings. I've read on here about spontaneous reboots and I had one tonight.

I recorded Waking the dead as a series recording in HD and we were watching Lewis in HD. No other recordings scheduled. At 21:00 the picture on the TV froze and the HDR rebooted. Lewis started again but the Waking the dead recording had an entry in the Media file but was not recording.

Software version 1.00.13
Loader U 7.54

I had an update to Freesat this morning:- 1 changed - no idea what it was.

Any more information needed for those of you compiling HDR problems?

There does not seem to be a pattern to these.

Most of us who've had the PVR for over two years have only had a very small number.

I think I have had six altogether and I haven't had one for many months. It was interesting that of those six four were in pairs - many months apart - where the box did two spontaneous reboots within a couple of days. Of course, the sample size is far too small for that to be relevant.

One thing we haven't had is someone reporting a reboot at a certain time and channel and others reporting identical reboots so it does not appear to be a problem inherent the datastream.

Since 2008 mine has done this maybe 3 or 4 times as Jepson says there does not seem to be much of a pattern.

The channel change the OP had was Radio Channel 708 changed it's name from Radio 7 to Radio 4 EX

An addition to my post above is that the Waking the dead entry has "Recording failed. Unknown reason" .

Hopefully that will be the last failure for a couple of years

Yeah I think I've had two reboots and I've had the machine since launch. I think in both cases they happened while we were watching something that we'd recorded and a recording was starting...

I also got recording failed unknown reason on some Frank Skinner prog. The only option available was delete.

Not just Humax though, Samsung V+ box rebooted itself over the weekend as we were watching something and a recording was kicking off.

Yes, it's one of the shoddier bits of Humax programming.

Clearly the box knows that it either deliberately stopped the recording for a reason or it just stopped (power fail or spontaneous reboot) so if they'd been a bit more diligent that could have provided some more information in the message.

It might be worth adding that some people have suggested that it could be a power supply problem - i.e. mains glitch - but (and this is just a personal opinion) I don't think that is very likely as Humax hardware is pretty good quality and modern PSU's are quite resilient. I think that if you'd had a mains drop-out severe enough to trigger a reboot you would have noticed other devices resetting or lights dimming.

Yes a couple of my reboots coincided with the start of a recording. I had to make manual recordings after the box rebooted

I was doing exactly the same and had no problems. Some (including me) suspect that fiddling with the remote as a recording starts or finishes can cause problems or maybe related to background EPG info scans or other housekeeping activity.

I am on the beta firmware but I do not think that is a factor in this case.

I was recording both WTD and Lewis both on HD streams and also watching another HD previous recording - no problems here

BUT I too have had spontaneous reboots often at recording starts /ends ...... maybe about 6-8 in total in over 2 years

I think I have had about three in 9 months - two were in very heavy rain flicking between channels to see signal strength and quality - it crashed on cbs action with quality down to 30% with broken sound and picture - I can forgive it those two. I tend to compare it to my retired Sky HD box - which had lock ups twice a month needing forced reboots.

Just to add another data point - if that was the one on 25/3, my recording of that also failed in exactly that manner - and I was probably chase-playing another recording at the same time.

We had our first in 2+ years last week when watching something and trying to record Waking The Dead. Last night we were watching Lewis on SD and the machine rebooted as soon as WTD was scheduled to record (again on SD). Again WTD showed as a broken recording. I manually set recording and switched back to Lewis - haven't checked but I assume WTD is OK.

Getting to be a nuisance.

No fiddling with the remote as we were concentrating on the Lewis plot. The box re-booted at the scheduled time for WTD start.

No power glitches.

We have an Oxford postcode so BBC1 Oxford and ITV Meridian South.

Last night I experienced the first reboot in a long while at 10pm. I was watching the the news on BBC1 while a recording of The Good Wife on More 4 was about to finish and a recording of Rubicon on BBC4 was about to start.
There was no clash screen and the Rubicon recording did not take place after the reboot. When I checked there was no failed recording entry in the Media list, but it was removed from the Schedule.
My guess is that there is a bug in the beta firmware which causes a reboot when there is a clash, instead of showing a clash screen. If other people getting spontaneous reboots can document the exact circumstances it may be possible to confirm this.

All I can say is I have had no spontaneous reboots since installing the beta firmware despite having several instances per week of B2B timers on different channels where overruns and early starts could cause clashes.

Ditto, lots of clashes - touch wood no reboots so far.

When was this beta firmware distributed? & how? & what was it for?

I seem to have had about 5 to 10 reboots in 2 years, of which only 3 coincided other devices showing flashing clocks, (therefore power cuts.)

Last, HDR only, reboot was 10 to 14 days ago.

I've had the box for just under two years. had first reboot about three weeks ago and another one not long after that. First one was after a recording clash. Second one wasn't flagged up as a clash but still at the transition between two recordings.

Mine reboots when I am setting a recording for the future and it is about to start a preset recording, so that supports the fiddling with the remote theroy. Not certain if we will get any worthwhile updates as my local Currys has them marked down in price as being discontinued.

I think that is is just the 320gb model that has been discontined teh 500GB is still being produced. As both have the same software then we should get any update that arives.

I've now had several spontaneous reboots while copying files onto an external hard drive. It always seems to be just after the operation completes. Sometimes "remote fiddling" might be involved, but other times it definitely is not.

I've had my humax for well over a year now. All I've ever had is the one freeze and I blame my girlfriend trying to move the channel guide down too fast.
