Hi

Thinking about getting a greyhound/lurcher. Where do I start?

I don't want to get a rescue as want to start from scratch without any problems. Can you find Greyhound/Lurcher breeders?

Don't be too quick to assume all rescue dogs have issues. The threads below sing the praises of greys and lurchers.

Check out the Homeless Hounds sections on Lurcher Link. You'll find dogs needing rehomed as well as rescue cases and sometimes pups.

There are loads of newborn lurcher puppies for rehoming at the moment. Very young no issues whatsoever, in fact they havve often had a great start with a foster mum and lots of socialisation.

As well as Lurcher Link try:

Greyhound Gap
Southern Lurcher Rescue
Lurcher SOS (mainly south east)
Evesham Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue
Greyhound Rescue West of England

Scrupples Whippet Rescue also rehome lurchers.

Both Lizzies Barn and Hope Rescue in Wales(i think?) have both had lurcher puppies for rehoming in the last few weeks as well (not that I have been looking!).

They are all great rescues - please give them a look before you

Hi - thanks to Wasp for putting my thread in this one!

Just a quick note, I have a 2 year old ex racer, who's settled into life as a pet and is young enough to forget all his was taught in kennels!

I also know an old couple who have got a puppy greyhound and have had a lot of trouble with him, due to his spriny-ness and destructive nature. They are actually having to take him to behavioural classes to try and calm him down,

I on the other hand am sitting smugly with my house trained, loving, quiet, fun, beautiful gentle giant and wouldn't do if any differently...

I dont know if it will influence your decision but please please considering adopting an older grey.. they are so loyal and loving and "easy" compared to the pups

I do find it a bit scary when people don't understand the type of dog they want - you can either have a greyhound OR a lurcher. A lurcher is a cross of a sighthound and another breed of dog. A greyhound is a pure breed,.... So, a lurcher could be a mix of a greyhound and another sighthound, but a greyhound is just a greyhound. If it's crossed with any other dog, it's either a lurcher or a weird cross. My parents bred lurchers, so I do have a bit of knowledge on the matter.

I read it that the OP means a greyhound or a lurcher, or one of those crossed with something else, rather than a cross of the two, which would then be a lurcher (just with a higher proportion of greyhound) anyway.
