Hey, I currently have a Nokia N97 and despite a few problems and the OS its actually a pretty good phone, it takes great pics and does the job and most importantly I can type like a rocket on it and bang out 10 pages worth of texts in under four minutes.

But, I need to upgrade, all the beautiful touchscreen phones like like HTC Incredible S look amazing, but not so easy to type on at that speed. I was going for the Nokia E7 cause its an amazing phone (apart from the OS) and has an amazing keyboard for typing on. HTC Desire Z has a great OS but the keyboard seems flimsy and not so easy.

Someone help me? What shall I do? I need a good camera and plenty of on board memory too. I prefer Nokia's more cause I'm use to their keyboard, simple OS and just find them easier but I would like a more flashy phone, just not if I can't type on it fast.

Do you want a "flashy" phone for the sake of a flashy phone or is there something you crave doing that you can't do right now. Symbian doesn't have momentum etc but the truth is that it's a capable OS (my last phone was an S60 device). My main limitation with that phone was crap browser - mitigated by using opera; non-touchscreen, small screen, slow etc.

Nokia keyboards were very good. Obviously blackberries are very capable when it comes to the typing etc.

When we see new, shiny objects we generally feel "ooh, life could be so much better with that device than what I've got now" but then after a short while of fiddling we get a bit bored and just revert to what we were doing before.


What kind of text are you producing - emails, SMS, word documents? For the first, blackberry is best; for word, perhaps Windows Phone 7's Office Mobile is the best mobile Office suite (better than 3rd party versions).

Also do you think you prefer a phone with a landscape keyboard or a portrait keyboard?

If I'm being honest, I can live with a symbian phone, its more peer pressure, everyone says I should get this it's so much better rah rah rah!

It just seems so much easier sticking with what I know and I do prefer landscape keyboards a lot!

As for text, I occassionally produce emails, barely ever word documents but am constantly producing very long SMS messages - I just feel like I would go crazy if I could not do this fast!

I was just seeing what everyone else thought really? Or if there were any other good alternatives (in terms of typing compared to Nokia E7)? I do like big screens for viewing things too. It's just apart from Blackberry's when you look for qwerty keyboards, there's like hardly any choice.

Yeah, people get hyped on their purchases and then if their friends get the same thing, it helps to validate their purchase. Don't succumb to the peer pressure unless you really want to.

Blackberries are good and popular - the Torch has a big screen.

HTC Desire Z is an Android phone with a qwerty keyboard. Tbh, Android phones come out all the time that I am not fully up-to-date on the newest ones but most are touchscreen/slate style.

WP7 has the Dell Venue Pro and HTC 7 Pro as phones with hardware keyboards.

Nokia - not uptodate on all the phone models but as you say you are familiar with Nokia and like their keyboards and clearly texting is something you do. Some new Nokias are well priced but Symbian as an OS is finished - Nokia is converting to WP7.

Is it worth spending £400+ on a new phone just so you can whatsapp/BBM your friends? That decision is up to you.

I just got a Desire Z - because I hate touchscreen typing. . I've seen a lot of complaints about supposed flimsiness of the keyboard - but I've found the whole build as solid as a rock.

The keyboard is pretty good - but nowhere as near as good as the Blackberry I use at work. If you're moving around typing messages all the time, the Blackberry is probably the one for you. The only problem is that even the latest models lag behind Androids and the IPhone in terms of bells and whistles.

I would also recommend a blackberry if it's typing you want to do.

If your constantly typing, then get yourself an android phone, with the swype or slideIT keyboards. here is a youtube video on how it works. You basically slide your finger over the letters to "type" the word. A lot quicker than typing.

For what it's worth I would say Blackberry too, if you're after a decent phone with a keyboard.

I also really like Nokia mobile phones. To me they are the best and the easiest to use.

My current mobile phone is a pay as you go Nokia 6303 Classic in silver on Tesco Mobile which I brought from Tesco Home plus store in March 2010 and I am very happy with it.

It has a great spec and is very easy to use. I will not be changing my Nokia 6303 Classic any time soon.

If you need or want a Nokia that has a qwerty keyboard then there is the Nokia C3 which looks like a Blackberrie but as it is a Nokia I feel that it will be better.

Really?? I just got a Blackberry Torch, but finding it near impossible to type on either the touchscreen or the tiny keyboard

I can vouch for this. I didn't like Swype to start with but having got used to it you can type at warp speed. In fact the record for texting was set on a Galaxy S with Swype.

You don't even have to hit the right keys it still gets the words right.

Another alternative is a Palm Pre 2. Touchscreen, lovely OS, slide out keyboard.

I too was initially after a decent phone with a decent keyboard.

I ended up with the Blackberry Bold 9780. It's not a touchscreen - just the keyboard.

When I first got it, looking at the size of the keys, I thought "I am never going to be able to type on this!" - but - it's amazing how quickly you get used to it and I must confess, I wouldn't be swapping this phone anytime soon - the keyboard is great and very easy and quick to use - much, much speedier than using the more traditional way of texting on a numbered keypad.

Honestly, do consider a Blackberry if typing and speed etc are your end goal!

I know touch screen phones are not normally that quick to type on, but Ive got HTC HD2 and my wife a Desire and there are a couple of keyboards that you can download for them both where you dont actually type (you just slide your finger across the keyboard). They take a little but of getting used to, but they are a lot quicker eventually (the somebody holds the Guinness record for speed of texting with one).
