I think something like Asus EEE Transformer running Windows 8 could be interesting. I am not a big fan of Android.

I've already got SDHC cards for my camera and camcorder.

Is there an adapter that would plug into the micro SD slot on the Transformer that would read the SD cards?

I'm beginning to think I should have got the keyboard dock as well.
I'm sure this has already been asked, the answer is there are no SD to microSD adaptors.

Extensive Googling had already led me to that conclusion.

If I have a microSD in the Asus and connect it to a PC the card isn't seen by Windows as a drive as it is in an Android phone for some reason.

I'm just a bit paranoid I suppose. My routine when on holiday has been to copy video and photos to my laptop, thereby halving the chance of losing them, I just don't like having everything on one device.

I wonder how I coped when everything was on 35mm film.

Is anyone going to buy the Asus EEE pad transformer I have one arriving on Friday from Comet.

It looks like a good android tablet to me as it runs honeycomb. I have an ipad 2 but want another tablet to do stuff the ipad 2 can't do.
Honeycomb 3.1, right? Honeycomb 3.0 was a little buggy for the Asus, if I recall correctly. John V. Karavitis

I believe thats because your phone does not have 2 memory modules.

Does it update automatically?

I can't check mine as daughter has nicked off to London with it for a couple of days.

It does eventually I think, but it will ask you to confirm whether you want to do it or not.

I was so excited that I was up at 6am this morning to manually update mine.

Actually the cat woke me up, but hey.

What exactly does 'proper SD card support' mean?

Mine updated to Android 3.2 yesterday and when connected to my laptop the SD card is shown as drive in My Computer now.

Having said that, transferring files to it is very slow - better to take it out and use the PC.

I've been looking at getting a tablet for a while now. After owning an iPod Touch for the past 3 years, I was originally looking at getting a iPad 2 but after seeing the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, I'm not sure what to do!

Do I go with the iPad 2 which I already have several Apps for from my iPod Touch and I know will be high 'Apple' quality.

Or do I go with the Asus Eee Pad Transformer. It sounds better on paper with more connectivity, flash support and keyboard dock.

Can anyone advise?

Nope, its personal choice. You know the options.

Why don't you do what I did - go along to PC World (John Lewis possibly) where they have the 'contenders' set up on display and working?

This is what I did (having previously played with the iPad 2 in Apple stores). After about 20 minutes I had narrowed it down to the Asus and Samsung and it was only reading the threads on here that swayed me towards the Transformer.

On thing I would say is that if you want to use a tablet to watch films then the iPad would be my last choice due to the aspect ratio of it's screen, it would be like watching on a non-widescreen TV.

The growth of Android is such that apps are developed for it routinely now, as they have been for the iPad.

The BBC iPlayer app works very well indeed and the Sky Go app is not far away I hear. As a book reader it's fine, but none of these devices are anywhere near as good as a Kindle in my view.

The keyboard dock wasn't available when I bought mine and initially I regretted that but don't really now as the only thing I now lack(that I would want) is the ability to use a standard size SD card.

It has 13GB free internal storage and I bought a 32GB micro SD card. It doesn't have 3G but I have a 3 Mifi modem or can tether my mobile to it, however the vast majority of the time it is on wi fi.

It is a matter of personal choice in the end, I don't have an agenda with Apple other than the fact that their products are a little to proprietary and overpriced for my taste.

Good description there, I thoroughly concur.

Add to that more Tegra2/Honeycomb optimised apps are appearing now

too proprietary, not to.

For anyone with a Sonos system the Transformer is a better controller than the Sonos touch screen controller - mainly due to screen size.

Is the Asus Eee Pad Transformer good at HD video playback? I've heard a few mixed comments, some saying it is good video playback others saying it isn't as good as the iPad.

I've not tried yet. I have read that the default player isn't too great, but one of the free players is absolutely tip top.

I can't say for certain until I've seen it myself though.

This is whats claimed for Tegra 2.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/tegra-2.html

The widescreen, higher resolution and screen size should theoretically compete.

Looks absolutely fine to me but I don't have an iPad to compare it side by side.

I'm thinking of getting one of these. Can it handle playback of 720p mp4 or MKV files?
