Do you have service on other sockets in the house?
Have you ever had 2 lines in the house?
Are you sure it's not just an extension of the main number?

We have a virgin media socket which we use at the moment but we have never used this other socket.

If you have never had a phone bill for the line then chances are it is inactive so won't necessarily have a number associated with it. There might not even be dial tone on it. Oh and having a Virgin Media phone service does not mean you can't have extensions from it.

Plug a phone into this mystery socket and listen for dial tone. If there is tone then try dialling out, to your Virgin phone if it has Caller Display or your mobile. Chances are it won't let you but if it does then you should see the number displayed on the phone you've called.

But as I say if you have never had a bill for it and it's not an extension of your Virgin phone it will probably be dead as the proverbial door nail

Many thanks for that.

If it is dead is there anyway of getting it working if we join BT or sky talk?

Assuming it is a dead former BT line then it should be possible to get it reactivated. All you would need to do is ask whoever you decide to rent the phone from to do the necessary.

They will of course lighten your wallet somewhat for the privilege
