Back in 2008 when BT increased their charges by 2000% (as reported in the Telegraph) I decided to go elsewhere, which was Primus Saver option 2.

I still pay BT for my line rental and that comes with BT Option1 with free weekend calls, and with the free weekday calls from Primus my phone bills are quite reasonable as we're not heavy users.

Now I've another letter from BT offering me an exclusive offer. Normally these letters go straight in the bin but this looks quite a good deal. It's for the Unlimited Anytime package, and it costs £3 a month. Included are free calls to 0870 and 0845 numbers. There's no mention of how long this exclusive rate lasts. I believe normally it's only 3 months but unless the small print is so small it's invisible, because I can't see it anywhere. It is a 12 month contract though.

My main reason for being interested is the free 0870 numbers. I try very hard never to use them and find the "saynoto 0870 site really useful but sometimes you have no choice and I always feel ripped off.

Can anyone who knows about these things comment on this offer?

What are BT not mentioning here

Is it worth me switching back to BT?

Also does anyone know what notice I have to give Primus for their Saver Option 2 plan? When I took out the plan I think it was a month. I can't find any information about it anywhere as it seems to have been discontinued.

The offer seems to 'free for 3 months' and then £5 (going down to £4.70!) a month thereafter. I was on this BT plan for a year and then moved to O2 who offer a similar deal but with ten hours of international calls (to landlines) as well each month.
A lot of places (especially theatres) are now moving to 0871 and 0844 numbers which are not included in any 'all in' package so keep an eye on 'Say no to 0870' to get an alternative.

Call BT and ask them about the offer they've sent you and get a clear idea of what's included.
You'll be tied in for at least a year and if you decide to 'move on' to another company after this make sure you inform BT of your intentions or they'll try and sting you for a 'broken contract fee' (as they did me but then dropped when I read back the letter they'd sent me!)

No idea about how Primus contracts work, sorry.

I don't think you have inclusive weekday 01, 02 & 03 calls on Primus Saver Option 2 - weekday evening and weekend is what I get.

Yes, you're right. Badly written OP on my part.

Actually I think it was on your recommendation that I moved to Primus back then, adding as well as the little known option Penny Mobile 2 you also recommended.

Can you confirm what the contract length was then, as I assume it's still the same? I can't find any details of my plan on the site.

Although I have had good service with Primus it would be a useful feature to have the free 0870 numbers as part of the BT's Unlimited Anytime if I were to switch my calls back to BT.
Knowing some of the less than ethical business practices BT have indulged in though (Phorm for one) I am still very wary of them.

Yes, I understand it to be 30 days too.

They do not appear to offer any CPS plans now and their customer services (which took a dive when they moved them to India before the takeover last year) appear to being trying to rival Talk Talk's.

Personally, I'd still recommend anyone still on Penny Mobile 2 CPS* to stay on it. The savings I've made on calls to mobiles have been and continue to be dramatic. However, I only have a PAYG mobile so 20p for a call of up to 20 minutes from my landline is a bargain (I couldn't even make a one minute call on BT for that amount).

You won't find details of Penny Mobile 2 (or any other CPS offering) on their website now.

* Using the 1280 prefix for weekend calls ensures Caller Display remains free.
