Retro Collections

On Thusday after work I brought Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection on the Playstation 3 and it's great. It brings back great memories from when I had a MK1 Sega Mega Drive with Mega CD MK1.

My brother for Christmas in 1993 got a Sega Mega Drive MK2

Please can any one tell me if there are any other retro collections on the Playstation 3, Wii and DS?

Has anyone had a go on these Sega Blaze handhelds and are they any good and how long is battery life?

And can you buy these on the high street in some where like Gamestation?

Do you know whats more fun than playing these games on he Wii/ DS ??

Its building a time machine and going back to the years when these consoles were in full flight, then you can even experience the games been released and everything.

Or

Whipping out the old console from your attic and hooking it up to your 50" HDTV and gong crazy on it. If you don't own it, ebay it. Its so worth it ! You will not be disappointed !

I've been looking at the Blaze Ultimate handheld as even though it comes with pre loaded games, you can also put your own megadrive roms on an SD card and play them too.

Personally, the only thing I find these retro collections good for is showing us how good we have it today!

I lived through the 8-bit and 16-bit eras and I have wonderful memories of them, I just think they're best left as just that, memories, that way I don't tend to remember the many flaws and frustrations.

I have one I've done an indepth review over on the retrogamer forums. It's a pretty impressive piece of kit, the battery life is awesome and the screen is stunning.

I have about 400/500 roms on the memory card that all work, although a couple have sound issues. There are a few roms that won't work, but the classics such as The Sonic Series, Streets Of Rage series, Golden Axe series all work perfectly.

If you're even a little interested in retro-gaming, it's a must have.

My purchase has been put on hold at the mo as I've just found an emulator with 700 roms for my PSP that doesn't require a hack so for now I'm gonna use that.
One thing that may sway me in the direction of the Blaze is the 6 button layout. Until then I will see how I get on with the PSP.

The problem with that is that retro consoles often don't fare up very well on modern HDTV's. Personally I do all my retro gaming on a 14" CRT as the graphics are a lot smoother on there than my 32" LCD.

That said, I agree with the essence of this post.

I ordered a Blaze Ultimate at dinnertime today from Game's website and I can't wait for it to come in the next couple of days. The SD card expansion is the main reason I wanted this so I can play games other than the 20 already on.

I've got a bit of a dilemma.
Currently running megadrive emulator on PSP which is great as:
Every rom that I've tried works.
I can save at any point I wish.
It saves automatically the info for the games that supported a save function.
It's a nice sized screen.
Most of all it's not cost me a penny
The negatives of the PSP is that the button layout, mainly for 6 button games is a bit pants.
It's a PSP1003 so the screens not too bright so no good for outdoor gaming.
And motion blur.

I'm tempted to spend out on the Blaze Ultimate as:
The button layout is excellent.
The screen is tops, bright and no motion blur.
SD compatable for more roms.
The negatives are that not all roms work.
No save feature, even on games that supported it originally.

What do you reckon folks, what would you do?

My Blaze Ultimate came just after 2:15pm today and I've had no problems with it so far. All of the roms I downloaded (except one) worked. It accepts bin and MD files but not SMD files. I would highly recommend the Blaze Ultimate to anyone that loves retro games - like me.

Here is my original review from the retro-gamer forums of the Blaze Ultimate:

Build Quality
First off, it's about the same length and width as a glasses case (about 6inches by 2.5 inches), and about 1.5cm deep at the thickest part.It feels solid, and looks kinda cool in black with orange bits around the buttons and on the base and top of the machine. It has 6 buttons plus a start and menu button and a well nice directional controller for your left thumb. The buttons all respon well and they are a joy to use on all games.

The on/off switch is on the bottom right underside of the machine and there is the headset 3.5mm jack on the left side. On the top of the machine is the USB, tv-out, memory-card slot and volume control. The Blaze "Gopher" takes a standard SD card and will run and .bin files meant for the Megsdrive/Genisis. It's a breeze to add games, just place them in the "games" folder on the SD card and away to go!

The sceen quality is simply stunning for a low cost device, bright and sharp it makes games look really nice. It's 3inches in diameter which is an ideal size for a portable device. In all the games I have played there has been no ghosting or pixelation, and the games just look like crystal clear Megadrive games!

Emulation Quality: Graphics

For the most part, of the 300 odd games I have run through have looked really good on the Gopher. That said, there have so far been about 2% of games that have had very minor graphical glitches. These include some tearing-effect one the sides of the screen or part of the screen being replicated at the bottom of the screen. To be fair, I managed to clear a lot of these problems up by downloading different region games. Overall all though I am very impressed with the quality of the graphics and how they look on the screen.

Vector Man (1) has some serious graphical issues when playing through the levels that make it unplayable, however Vector Man 2 seems to work perfectly fine. I know there are some other games that suffer graphical problems, but I have yet to find them as I am too busy playing the games I love.

Emulation Quality: Sound
Now, before I start I need to say that for the most part I do not have the sound on when playing this machine and in the future I will not have the sound on much. Simply because I will be using it on the move and in work when I will be listening to music or doing something else.

So, for the games I have tried with the sound on, the sound is either more-or-less spot on (like Streets Of Rage/Golden Axe/Sonic Series of games), or pretty average; mostly, either the music in the games will be spot on with bad sound effects or vice versa. It's not something that bothers me too much as it doesn't really distract me from the gameplay, but it is worth pointing out that some games may sound a bit wrong.

Emualtion Quality: General Compatability
Overall 99.9% of games I have tried have worked, and if they didn't work I simply downloaded a rom from another source to get them working. Games play full speed and run very smoothly. There are some games with 6-button problems, so-far I have found only Ms Pacman and one of the Fifa games, but there is such an amount of games for the Megadrive that this is not really a problem.

Overall impressions
If you're after a megadrive emulator machine with an 8+hour battery life, brilliant screen, SD card for unlimited games and light enough to take anywhere with you then this really does fill that role. It's not perfect by any means, but with hundreds of games working perfectly fine on it, I don't think it matters.

It comes with 20 built in games, which are a nice selection, but its the SD card that is the real draw here. One note though, I had to use an SD Card adaptor to USB to attach to my PC as the Gopher did not show up on my machine. Again, not a problem as adaptors are £1 or less in most places!

In work, my staff have been using it today on their breaks and they have all enjoyed it. No-one has had any problems with the control or the pick-up and play nature of the Gopher. The interface is simple to use, and I didn't have to explain it to anyone, which is always a plus in my books.

If you've got a spare £40 and love the Megadrive, I think it's a bargain (and I know it's gonna get a lot more use than my PSP now gets!)

Recently I bought 2nd hand 'Metal Slug Anthology Collection' on Wii for £7. I'd highly reccommend it if your into old SNK games. It contains 7 metal slug games on one disc!

All my retro gaming is done on a 32" CRT via the Wii and XBox, between both of them I have access to the systems I care about (C64/Amiga/Megadrive/NES/SNES/CPS1/2).

For on the go emulation the PSP is really good, but the one thing I don't like about it is the motion blur, it puts me off using it tbh, I much prefer the DSi XL as it doesn't suffer the same fate, it has an amazing LCD screen, the only problem is the emulators aren't quite so good because of the low resolution of the DS screen. It is however top class for ZX Spectrum and Gameboy/Gameboy Colour. There's also a cracking NES emulator being worked on right now too, having the entire NES library at my disposal on an XL is all I need!

I think only the 1000 model has motion blur. The 3000 certainly doesn't.

In regards to the PSP, what Emulator are you using? The one I have allows me to Center the screen to match the original resolution, but of course you're left with a smaller square to play. The 4:3 aspect scale does have some Bilinear filtering but you can also turn that off which gives the games a really rough a jagged look.

PSP 2003 and I use Picodrive for the MD emu. I tend to notice it more when I take off the bi-linear filter and scale it up 1:1.

I wanna post some useful information about Sega Gopher - if want to put some pictures for your games on SD-card, like the built-in ones have, you may use program called ScreenGopher - http://screengopher.freehosting.com/eng/index.html - an ultimate MDB.DAT editor
