I bought an unlocked and unbranded Desire which I believe was previously on Tmobile.

I'm on a Vodafone contract originally with a different phone but am now using the Desire. It's running 2.2 Froyo.

It's not rooted so how can I find out when 2.3 will be ready? Is it down to Vodafone even though it's not their handset?

If it's an unbranded handset you'll be able to download the software as soon as it comes out. I had an unbranded HTC Hero [via Vodafone contract] and I got the update weeks before other networks.

Good Luck with the upgrade to a better version of Android cos your gonna need it as the whole thing is a joke. I had a samsung Galaxy portal running 2.1 and as far as I know its still waiting for an upgrade.
That's why I got an iphone 4 cos with Apple when a new upgrade is available everyone gets it, Have had the iphone since January 2011 and have had upgrades to 4.3 and 4.31. Android is Ok if your happy to accept second best or you cant afford an iphone4, I rest my case!

That's just stupid, a majority of Android phones are in the same price range as the iPhone.

If you are happy enough being told what you can and can't do by Jobbs then fine. I'd rather have a bit more freedom and control myself over what I can do on my handset.

I agree it's nice to all be updated at the same time and that is 1 plus point about the iphone, however there are downsides to going to iphone over android too, such as the lack of flash and restrictions placed on the platform by apple. You may have paid Mr Jobbs for his iphone, but he wants to insist upon how to use it once you own it too. He also wants his 30% cut of everything so he can continue building up his $14Bn a year company. He doesn't care about open sourcing or opening up a platform, just maximising profits and closing things as tightly as possible.

In some ways that can be good, but there are ups and downs like I say. I have owned both an Android and an Iphone and I like them both.

Serious guys, I have no interest in the iPhone otherwise I'd have bought one, so please take your Apple evangelising elsewhere thanks.

No it shouldnt be down to vodafone if the handset is unbranded. It might be a different story if the handset has been DEBRANDED though. If it isn't htc have said that they plan to release 2.3 on the desire in the summer.

quote from htc : Hi all, we are planning for Incredible S, Desire, Desire HD and Desire Z to all receive the Gingerbread update in Q2.

Cheers for that, but isn't Q2 around April, ie now?

I have a HTC non-network Desire too. When I Googled this same question it came up with April as being the release date for 2.3. As a confirmed pessimist I'll wait and see.

Well for a start you're wrong the iphone 3g doesnt have the 4.3 update..

my ipod 2g has the 4.2 however..

answer to the OP.. i have an HTC Desire which was originally on orange and now on giffgaff.. you will have to wait for the official update from HTC which will forward it onto your network, in your case Vodafone.. then you can download it then

Correct. Q1 = January-March, Q2 = April-June.

If you cant wait, you could always root your phone and install a custom rom. Some of which now are based on Gingerbread. Otherwise as others have said, wait for HTC to add Sense to gingerbread.

It's complicated though, if like me you have already updated the handset to the latest software you have to downgrade the software, then root, then do the custom rom etc

It's going to be in the next 10 weeks they say, so I'm going to wait. There isn't a big difference to be honest, but the thing I want fixed is the AAC+ audio codec, as HTC still haven't implemented googles code fix for this and I'm hoping it will be fixed by this.

Unrevoked 3.21 can root Froyo (2.2) without downgrading.

Interesting, still think it's worth waiting as official is coming in the next 10 weeks, but thanks.
