Classic Who - Tom Baker (marginally ahead of Peter Davison)

New Who - Matt Smith (marginally ahead of Christopher Eccleston)

The best one is the one you personally like the best. There is no best one, therefore.

Only watched since 05 but it's Matt Smith for me loved David Tennant but I think they slowly ruined his Doctor towards the end but I think Smith is fantastic and don't remember much about Ecclestone's Doctor other than I thought he was good nothing more.

Tom Baker.
You mean there were other Doctors?

Matt Smith and Peter Davison....

Well, I never really rated Doctor Kildare, and although I did like Doug Ross and Doogie Howser, MD, but I think the best one is The Doctor.

Changes all the time but currently Tom Baker and Matt Smith.

Classic Who - Troughton.

Nu-Who - Smith.

Favourite Doctor Overall - Patrick Troughton (in my mind there is no contest)

Must say I was impressed with Pertwee watching Carnival of Monsters recently when he got irritated when he was accused of being a bad traveller and when he didn't understand polari. His reactions were spot on, and he was probably a better actor than anyone who succeded him, at least in the classic series.

Peter Davison but Matt Smith is close behind him!

In my humble opinion there is no such thing as a "best" Doctor as there are so many variables to take into account. For example those posters who never watched or grew up with classic Who (hate that term) only have a choice of three to pick from and as peoples opinions seem to change weekely, some of those who praised D.T to the heavens now poo poo him and sing the praises of Matt as being the best ever Doctor. So surely the question should be "Who is you favourite Doctor of those that you have seen ?"

Yeah, this is partly true, but it is possible for people to make judgements on the acting skills of the actor playing the Doctor. For example, in my opinion, the first three Doctors of classic Who (also hate that term!) were much better actors than the four who came after them, and the Sixth and especially the Seventh had very limited acting ability.

It's easier for me to point out my least favourites than my favourites because almost all of them I greatly enjoy.

I don't like Six at all, however much I try to get into him, and Seven is too goofy (and Sylvester McCoy is just not a great actor IMO).

Eight I discount completely to be honest, because he's only in one story (and no, I don't listen to audios) and it's an awful one.

One, Two, Three, Four and Five are all equally excellent for me and I love how wildly different but always believable their takes on the character are.

Nine, Ten and Eleven are my Doctors, because I'm not old enough to remember the classic series. If I was pushed I'd say Ten, but there is more than a little of personal feelings/nostalgia in there, because the peak of my Who obsession coincided with his Doctor. Plus it is just an amazing era of the show, and David is pretty damn brilliant. Matt is incredibly promising and I rate him pretty highly but it's too soon to make my mind up and I always find it difficult to judge the current Doctor alongside the others.

Yeah those would be my picks too.

On a side note I don't get the Tennant love people have though, I have him down as one of the worst Doctors ever and on top of that he isn't even good looking (not that needs to be a trait of the Doctor). Only a few of his stories were engaging and interesting and his companions too gobby and hormonal. I was probably one of the few Whovians that was actually pleased that he was leaving and cheered when he regenerated.

Classic Who Pertwee

New: Tennant although I have liked all three

But this is about the best Doctor, not the best era of the show in general. Eg. I think The Doctor's Daughter is a seriously poor episode but think David's brilliant in it.

It's all opinion to be fair, and I'd like to think his looks didn't influence my opinion!

Tennant. Smith may overtake him by the end of his run though.

I only have 3 to choose from, I started watching when it came back in 2005. But for me it has to be Tennant

My favorite is David Tennant, then Peter Davison.

My favourite at the moment is Matt Smith (although my favourite tends to always be the current doctor).

After that it has to be Christopher Eccleston. I liked DT at the time but by the end of the specials he started to really grate on me and now I can barely watch his episodes, which is a shame because he was really rather good.

I also rather love Paul McGann probably because the TV movie was the first encounter I ever had with Doctor Who. Although I haven't watched it in years so maybe my memories are better than the actual thing.

I am inclined to agree with you. The more I see of Smith's doctor, the more I like him. Right now Tennant is ahead, but not sure he is going to keep his lead...
