What are the songs that you loved and thought would be instant chart smashes that failed to make much of an impact and faded away? Mine is Clare Maguire The Last Dance.

Any song by TLC apart from No Scrubs. Underrated.

Stone Cold Sober by Paloma Faith, one of my favourite recent songs and it's sort of known but nowhere near as much as it should be.

'Stay' by Hurts. For me, it was almost the perfect pop record. The public (UK, at least) didn't agree with me. I'll get over it.

That's actually pretty well known, or at least I thought it was. Never went probably big though, I suppose.

Alesha Dixon - Drummer Boy. The song itself wasn't awful but as a lead single, it was.

Peaked at 26, I was certain this song was going to blow up for Marina...it wasn't even remotely a hit

While these weren't necessarily expected to be 'chart smashes' I would have really loved for these songs to have got the recognition they deserved:

Foals - Spanish Saraha should have been a much bigger hit last year.
Anything by Friendly Fires. They still seem very underated. I'd love Live Those Days Tonight to chart
The Naked and Famous - Young Blood. Brilliant song. Seen it live, and it was especially good.

I think the saturdays left it too late to release Work. It should have been their debut instead of If This Is Love, I always thought it was a weak single choice.

And Sunday! That deserved to be a huge hit.

I actually agree with most the songs that have been mentioned in this thread.

That should have been a massive UK record! I couldn't believe it when that didn't even grace the Top 40. It should've been Top 5 at least.

I'd have to go with - Sound of Guns - Architects - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nsf9kKjfwg

I genuinely thought this could have bought back a little bit of Indie/Rock into the charts but it didn't even chart!

Completely agree. Their debut was rubbish in comparison to the absolute gems that followed.

I think part of the reason Work got such a low chart position/sales was because the week it was released, Michael Jackson died - so most of the songs in the top end of the chart that week were MJ songs.

And wasn't there a campaign to get Untouchable in the top 10 but it failed?

'Rocket' by Goldfrapp had number 1 written all over it...
'Believer' by Goldfrapp had top 10 written all over it....
'Familiar Feeling' by Moloko had top 5 written all over it...

What am I rewarded with instead? Rihanna/Katy Perry & Taylor Swift. BARF, double BARF & Triple BARF.

ITIL was good but it should have been third or fourth single really and Work could have done well as their debut. I think by the time that came out most people had the album with the song anyway. It could have been their third single too instead of Issues (even though I like that song).

I'm amazed Heartbeat by Annie didn't chart. Or any other Annie songs, for that matter. She has the potential to be a huge artist, and her songs are genius.

Likewise with Dominos by The Big Pink, although now it's been sampled on that horrific Nicki Minaj record I guess it might go somewhere.

Agree with "Stay" by Hurts.

In fact their entire album deserved to be massive.

It really is a complete mystery why this band aren't bloody huge in the UK! It seems like our European brethren have recognised their potential pop greatness before us. I'm hoping for an Adele-like take-off for the follow up but I probably wouldn't put any money on it. The album is just choc full of pure pop nuggets IMO. I really am baffled by it all.

PS If they had written 'Stay' for Take That i reckon that would have been the lead single from Progress and probably stayed at number 1 for weeks and weeks. Add in the fact that Hutchcraft is a far better singer than any member of Take That and in my wife's opinion a 'hottie' it just makes me shake my head why they are ignored in their home nation.
