The person who DEFINITELY needs to go is ...

.... Jimmy the *&^% producer
completely ruining some talented singers.
a wonderful example of all that's wrong with today's music scene.

Apparently this guy had it written into his contract that he would have a very big say in how and what the contestants performed and have complete say over how the studio versions sound.

I'm not a fan of Jimmy Iovine on the programme, BUT, to be fair, he is a genuine industry legend, and he has gotten really big names (Rodney Jerkins, Don Was, Ryan Tedder) into the studio to work with the contestants, which has to be a good thing for them.

When Universal took over the musical reins from Sony for this season, one of the things they said was that they wanted to concentrate more on the studio versions of the songs, and produce great tracks the public would want to hear, not just quick cash-ins.

Jimmy's been a massive disappointment to me so far, the song choices range from completely predictable and done a million times before to the downright bizarre. Not sure if the producers have complete control over what the contestants sing, but where we know for definate, they've not been, to put it nicely, great picks.

Don't know if it's his contract, or the majority of the contestants have little or no idea of their own direction and need someone to pick for them

As I've said elsewhere, the contestants this year seem to need all the help they can get and don't appear to have an imaginative or assertive bone between them. The closest to making a stand has been Jacob's refusal to do Let's Get It On, though I wonder how far he would have taken it had he been told he was doing that song whatever he thought.

Yet they're still not selling in anywhere near the numbers that the studio versions of some previous contestants have.

Jimmy I may be a legend, but the studio versions are not great. However, overall the standard of the performances is improving across the board and is good.
What is missing is water-cooler moments, but I am not sure that it is because of JI.
The most artistic don't have the voice (Casey and Paul), and those who have the voice (James, jacob, Stefano, Pia) lack something.
Scotty and Lauren are very young.

I'd say James and Stefano fall into both categories - no artistry and little more than average voices.

Some of his ideas have been good, like the hip hop beat to James' Maybe I'm Amazed. Others, like the rather odd arrangement to Jacob's Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word have been less successful.

My only gripe is I wish he'd stop dressing so casually when appearing on Idol because he doesn't really command any producer authority when he's dressed like someone who could be selling you a hot dog.

Talking of predictable song choices, http://www.whatnottosing.com/ has a great article this week about songs featured on the show before, basically concluding that the most successful contestants tend to avoid songs previously sung on the programme. David Cook (for example) only ever sung songs new to the show, except when forced to on "Judges' Pick" night.

Conversely, Jacob is yet to perform a "new" song, and only 1 out of 6 of Pia's songs was new to the show... on top of which, the average age of songs being sung on the show is the highest it's been for a few seasons, something like 33 years old (twice the age of the youngest contestant!), so they're hardly pushing the envelope...

Just one of the countless things about this year's contest that screams "Out of touch".

I'd love for the contestants to pick their own songs. They couldn't do a much worse job than the producers, and they might come up with more modern songs that they, as young people, listen to. I like the studio versions (by contestants I like, anyway) but some of the arrangements could be better. Would love to hear more modern songs too, as long as they're good. I'm not after Bieber etc

I agree minxymoo. i wish more of the contestants would stand up to him and his dated ideas. Jacob's speech didn't do him any favours but it was good to see him refuse a song choice he wasn't comfortable with.

Perhaps this week, he should lumber them wih novelty records - just to see who fights back and who ends up singing Barbie Girl
