Further to earlier suggestions on another thread (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s....php?t=1438387), I have been thinking of going down the “SEPERATES” road.

To watch Blue Ray discs at this time, I am using a Philips BDP3100 to feed the picture, and then feeding the audio from the Philips BDP3100 through a Panasonic Sa-ht990 Home Cinema System. I would like the set-up to be along the lines of the Samsung-HT-C6930w (current price around £500).

To save money, I would be using the speakers from the Panasonic Sa-ht990 Home Cinema System and the Philips BDP3100 Blue Ray player. I have looked at stand alone Amps, but not found any powerful or cheap enough. To be honest, if I could afford it, I would buy the Samsung-HT-C6930w and be done with it. Any ideas

I can't believe you can't find an Onkyo Amp. both powerful enough, and within your price range.

Ignore the power output figures for systems. They lie through their teeth, even Onkyo do it.

What they do is drive one channel only to full volume then multiply that figure by how many speakers there are. Trouble is the power supply they fit can only drive one or at best two channels to full whack. So you end up with a system that claims to have 1000W output but only a 200W power supply. Which as anyone with a passing knowledge of physics will tell you is impossible!

Also I would not advise using the Panasonic speakers with another system. It is not unknown for the speakers to be low impedance. Perhaps too low for the amp to be happy. Certainly Onkyo don't recommend anything under 6ohms. It is entirely possible the Panasonics are 4ohm, so it may not be happy driving them.

Plus is the sub active or passive (ie does it plug into the mains or not). Most "grown up" AV receivers are designed to drive active subs. They don't have any amplifier on board to drive the sub directly. They rely on the amplifier in the sub for that.

What is the simplest way Chris with readily available components to convert the feed wires to an otherwise cheapo system passive sub to feed a weighty Active Sub.
which has no equalistion facilities..but a labelled Mains power of 168W..
It looks a gleaming silver beast but sadly Silent for now..
Cannot find any spec googling but labelled Panasonic SB-WA54..

Onkyo 608s will happily drive 4 ohm speakers. I use mine for that - as approved by the manual.

Will require an active sub though. Look at BK Electronics for one.

Has anyone ANY idea how ridiculous a true 1000W Amp would be in normal house?

In that case Onkyo need to update their FAQs

Thanks for all the replies, I’m going to stick with what I’ve got for now.

When I moved house four years ago, my priority was for a detached house. This was so I could watch films as loud as I wanted to. And boy do I have my films loud. So much so that the floor, sofa and the rest of the house vibrate, lovely
