The shine CD was only released in Japan as Sony picked it up when she resigned with them. She left sony in 1998 and signed with edel records america and the shine CD was meant to be released in the USA on 9/11 the day the twin towers came down. But the record label folded a week before even though she was promoting the album release.
She then had to get her songs back from the label and when she did she released a 4 track EP on her own through an indie distributor. She then resigned to sony records in 2003 and they distributed the full album at fans requests but only in Japan. Shine should have been the break through song that respaked her career. |

Its sad the lable did not help promote the BYTTB album more as is the case for quite a few of her albums
the reason for the japan only release of Shine was that most of the album was already leaked due to the lables bankrupsy (thanks had to import the fecker) with the leak, Sony and indeed Cindy herself did not have much faith in the album, but i maintain that with the right backing and promotion the title track would have made a huge hit for her, Who let in the rain could have made another, oddly enough nighter ever got much airplay be that radio or TV Alas we only got 2 EPs (can be imported still tho) Sisters of avalon should have made a much larger impact than it actualy did again no lable backing, She had to tour as opening act for Cher on her farewell tour to get exposiure to the album, but then again it was a topical album much like its predecessor. I really do understand when some say they have a hard time figuring out where to put Lauper in the "nice" conforming boxes, well as i see it, she never did conform to any single style or topic. |

I do wonder who/what determines the selections for those seeminly standardised track lists that crop up over and over again on such compilations (including those cheap CDs in supermarkets), as opposed to what is never included.

Well I saw some interview with Cyndi talking about her 3rd (solo) album and fame ( A night to remember) this comes right after the fame that came after She’s so unusual and True colors, Both of them box office hits with SSU at 2 and TC at 1 on the US billboard. Her management wanted more of the same, where she was more interested in the artistic perspective of music, and not bothered with what would be popular, this pretty much has been true throughout her career, doing / writing only the lyrics she wanted to do, this is perhaps the reason why we tend to think and feel when listing to them, where as many of her contemporary artists lyrics seem somewhat blan in comparison, that coupled with a insightful way of arranging the music to same lyrics
. And tbh if you listen to (sorry josh and whoever else I offend with this) Madonna, Britney and many others live without autotune or it being flat out lip singing you really want to crawl in the nearest hole, I am sorry but in my ears that’s the definition of a true artist, being able to sing what you recorded in studio live, without the use of autotune or the like. That withstanding I am not saying that the “others” aren’t artists they should just stick to recording I swear if I have to endure an actual live Britney concert again I’ll have to do a /wrists Ohh and saw Cyndi Live on the 18 in Denmark was awesome even tho she played a lot from her Blues album. |

Bump!
Listened to Shes So Unusual and Bring Ya To The Brink and I FREAKING LOVE THEM!! She Bop is such a gem! And Bring Ya To The Brink is such an overlooked album, Echo is such a great song! What are the inbetween albums like? I don't actually know anything about her other than these two albums but if they're as good then I'll have found a new musical love

Yay the thread had posts and hadnt read them :-O
Yes Robotrock Shes So Unusual is a corker of a debut isnt it and glad you loved it as well as Bring Ya To The Brink! And i agree with Mr F, True Colours and Sisters of Avalon i would definitely recommend next! SOA i think is the better of the two as it has these trippy tribal elements in the album (as late 90s could be!) And maybe last check out A Night To Remember and Hat Full Of Stars, both very mixed in reception but i like them a lot. HFOS because it is very personal to her i think and ANTR because it was what True COlours should have been but she changed it up a bit late. |

I lovvvvvvvvvve Cyndi Lauper, ever since her 12 Deadly Cyns days
Bring ya to the brink was way under played, under promoted.... Easily some excellent songs of the last decade on here, Into The Nightlife, Rocking Chair and Lay Me Down are all awesome |

I first heard of Cyndi in 1994 when she released Hey Now and 12 Deadly Cyns. I fell in love with her in her little red bowler had and yellow hair and I haven't looked back since. I have every single album she released, and I loved the At Last album she did.
Not too keen on Memphis Blues, I want to be but I'm not lol Went to see her in Dublin in 2008, she came into the crowd, I thought I was going to leap over the edge of the balcony and join her. The most memorable moment of the night was the end when she sang Girls Just Wanna Have Fun which gradually merged into Hey Now Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and the whole crowd sang this for ages until the whole band was off stage, the atmosphere was electric! |

I remember hearing The World Is Stone on the radio (when it was a new release),and just stopping what I was doing and just really listening to it,getting goosebumps. I didn't know who it was (how could I not recognise *that* voice),and hoped the dj would say the name of the artist - and he did ! I bought that on cassette single, and loved the B side too. Shoulda been a big hit.
I don't have all the albums, but rank the ones I have so far as... 1. A Night To Remember 2. Bring Ya To The Brink 3. Hat Full of Stars 4. She's So Unsual 5. True Colors ^^^ all amazing, and the order changes depending on my mood. 6. At Last 7. Sisters of Avalon (shocked at the love for it on this thread). |

Sisters of Avalon is a brilliant album.
I love One Track Mind on the True Colours album, great haunting song. Anyone buy her Christmas album? Merry Christmas Have A Nice Life - it's really good too |

yeah i have the Christmas album as well. not that impressed with it tho.
dont think i could do list of best albums, as it changes depending on my mood, but would have to rank Body acoustic quite high this week, really love the acoustic arangement of the music. Edit: Oh yeah have to agree not that big a fan of Memphis Blues as i would like to be, was at the London hammersmith show two months ago, she had changed the old stuff too much torwards Blues. It have to be said i really like Blues music, and i LOVE Cyndi's voice, But i have to say that i think her voice is really made for Rock (not pop) she does give some indications of grit in her voice on the Blues album but not to an extend where i would place her as a Blues singer, would have to say that she would do better with a "real" rock album. Her Live voice would be just perfect for it, if you havent seen her live you really owe it to your selfs, if not able to go to a show you should pick up her Live. . . At last DVD. It really showes her great voice. Heres a sample of her live voice from the Live . . At last DVD |
