I'm due to move house shortly, and currently with o2 for landline & broadband.

The area I'm moving to has a few specific BT area codes (let's say it's Manchester so the city code is 0161, and in one particular area the codes are 832, 831 & 830). I would want the number to be 0161 832 xxxx.

Would o2 or any other landline provider allow me to specify this? The reason I ask is that I used to live in that area, and know of a few numbers with that code which are no longer in use.

You can request a choice of numbers for mobiles so I would imagine you can with landlines too. You will need to call them and ask though, there won't be an online option for it.

They will charge extra for this though.

I'm intrigued to know why it matters to have a particular area code?

I've only ever heard of landline providers letting you keep your existing phone number when you move house, not actually choosing the number. Aren't landline numbers supposed to be limited in availability which is why we all had our numbers extended by so many digits years ago?

You could always get a VOIP number from one of the many VOIP providers.
I use sipgate and have an area code and phone number from my old home town some 200 from where I am now. It does confuse friends when I call them as they think I hav moved back.
Can be used on any BB router, i use a linksys ATA that just plugs into my BT Homehub and a standard phone plugs into that.
