So I'm just looking at the midweek charts: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chart/update/singles

Good Lord. Where on Earth have all the British artists gone? There's only Adele, Jessie J and Katy B in the Top 20. And only 3 British bands in the Top 40? That has to be some sort of an unwanted record, surely; any chart statisticians about?

I saw this article in the Daily Mail: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...sic-chart.html (know how DS loves a DM link) about music industry bosses promoting our wares to our colonial friends, but you'd think that first of all they'd be looking a bit closer to home, wouldn't you?

One reason for it is that they've started this new on air-on sale approach to the charts, so British artists such as Jodie Connor and Chipmunk, who probably could've had a week in the top 10 if their songs were held back, have been hovering at the bottom end of the top 100 for like a month.

Also, I think another factor in this is that, and don't hate me for this, but I think, on average, the American songs are better than the British ones. I'm talking about chart music btw, not about underground obscure groups.

But in terms of CHART music, which better, Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Eminem, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Jay-Z, Cee-Lo Green, Alicia Keys, Bruno Mars vs. Chipmunk, Cheryl Cole, Adele, Tinchy Stryder, N-Dubz, Jessie J, Ellie Goulding, The Saturdays, Tinie Tempah and JLS.

Do you see what I mean. Yeah, Tinie Tempah, Jessie J, Adele, etc. do put out pretty good songs, but I think UK artists, as a WHOLE, pale in comparison to US artists, as a WHOLE, at the moment.

I know people will hate me for this, but there aren't any mainstream British artists releasing pop songs as good as Firework, Bad Romance, Only Girl, etc. at the moment, for example, so it's no wonder the US artists are doing better.

Most people buying the songs don't have a clue where the artists live. They just buy the songs which they like.

Agree with the above. And actually, I know for a fact there are quite a few casual radio listeners who thought Rihanna is a British citizen immigrant, whilst Jessie J is American.

This! It's very true of me and I think of most people, that I really don't care (or sometimes even know) where the artist I'm listening to is from. But you're right about there being a lack of British talent. Having said that, Adele alone has accounted for 10% of all CD sales in the UK this year, so it's probably still quite evenly balanced at the moment considering Jessie J, Mumford and Sons, Tinie Tempah and Plan B have all had pretty massive albums lately.

You need to stop putting people down and search for the nice person inside yourself. Also the hero.

To be fair, you can say the same thing about films and other forms of entertainment. We're overrun with American entertainment. Not that it's always a bad thing. Some of my favourite things are 'merikan.

I also think that British music is at a low at the moment. It's recycled junk. Then again, so is most chart music these days.
