I'd start by rebooting the phone.

Does your friend connect the phone to the computer to effectively use it as a broadband modem? Some phones allow this.

If your friend is doing this, browsing sites and downloading files can easily use up 500mb

I thought there were safety mechanisms that only let you download large apps over WIFI.

Either way, giffgaff is the answer.

giff gaff may indeed be the answer yet he is tied to a contract,

just had him on the phone, a whack of data was used while he was playing a darts match so no way could he be downloading, will find out more tomorrow when he's visited the orange shop...

I always turn wireless and data connection off when out and about and try to use mine only on Wifi. Pretty much always get a wifi connection when out and about but thats pretty much in urban area's though.

giffgaff is the answer.. my monthly usage on giffgaff so far this month is 12gb... I use 500mb in no time as tbh it isn't all that much at all let me know if you want a giffgaff sim to try, yes he may be tied to a contract but he or you could always try giffgaff... how much did he pay for his 500mb add on?

with a simple £10 top up (in addition to the contract) would have given a lot more data than 500mb...

giifgaff is not the answer.

if his phone i using 500meg of data in an hour then that is a problem that needs addressing. moving to giffgaff wont fix that.

I have advised a few people who say it's the networks billing them incorrectly and found out it was something on their device that was causing the problem.

Only advice i can offer is remove all applications and wipe the device, add each app on individually again and monitor the usage from that point. Something is using the data and you need to pinpoint it ASAP.

They may have been streaming youtube/catchup TV all sorts so just ask them to explain their usage to you and what they have been doing (may be worth looking at browsing history)

I think it's more to do with the colour bleu than rouge.

As it's a HTC desire you could do internet passthrough and then monitor what the phone is connecting to via wireshark on a pc, but that would require somebody who is quite technical to do it.

I'd be tempted to do a factory reset and then only add 1 app at a time and keep a close eye on usage.

I start by tracking the data usage of each app. These apps claim to be able to do that (I have no experience of them):

Must be streaming a lot of media.

I surf and download a lot of apps on my phone, but only once gone over my 500MB limit.

As goomba has suggested, use an app that will monitor the usage of each app. I personally use 3g watchdog pro
its a great little app.

Switching to another network is not the answer. Your mate needs to finds out what is eating that much data, then uninstall it.

Check what has downloaded to the phone, perhaps a 'mate' thought it would be funny to download a movie or two while he played darts.
