My new Panny has Optical output..
I assume that audio chips are Bog Standard these days..Hence..
Can I assume that everything going into the TV via HDMI will automatically produce Optical sound output with no worsening or loss of features than when Opt.Out taken from each item to the Audio Amplifier..
Would cost more for cable but save an Opt. Switch?

Via a HDMI source connection then going out by Optical:
Stereo in - Stereo out........Yes
Dolby Digital in - Dolby Digital in........Yes, usually
DTS in - DTS out.........No, normally
HD audio in - HD Audio out........No
You might have the TV that's the exception, so check your manual.

Bit of a misleading list?.

You don't mention DD5.1 (which is what most people would assume you meant by DD).

Because DD5.1 in - DD5.1 out .... No, normally.

Usually the only way to get DD5.1 out is from the sets internal HD tuner.

My G20 will output 5.1 from ethernet and USB sourced video files as well.

I've not tried through HDMI as the SkyHD box does not do it.

Just had a thought I could try my BluRay later and see if what happens with that, currently it's connected directly to an AV amp.

Just checked and there is nothing from the Sony BDP370, unless there is something I need to set to get the player to output 5.1 through HDMI.

If you were getting 5.1 through the AV amp then you should get 5.1 through the telly, if it supports it. That is assuming you only have a HDMI connection to the AV amp.

Not sure if the 370 has any more options an my 350 but the only options I have for HDMI audio are Auto and 2ch stereo. I know that set to Auto it outputs 5.1 to my Onkyo amp OK.

Cheers Chris, that means that the TV doesn't output incoming HDMI 5.1 audio from its optical out.

Like I said, TV's almost all don't output 5.1 except from their internal HD tuners. Ethernet and USB though, are a different matter - I've no idea if they do or not, it's not really a TV input at all.
