They could have been more careful who was invited to the 'press' screening. If it was intended for journalists who needed to write about the episodes for magazines & tv guides, it should have been limited to that. Presumably they do this all the time & can be trusted.Other people attended who were less than discreet. If the bbc treated it as a PR jolly, they only have themselves to blame.

What we are dealing with hear appears to be someone who's sole purpose is to seek attention.

They could have just easily have typed up the synopsis elsewhere and then started a thread asking FMs to message her if they wanted to know. It would have just been a simple copy and paste job after that. But no, they knew full well that people would not have resisted temptation and read at least some of their post, or inadvertantly read some in the process of alerting their thread to the mods.

So I would just like to say to the OP of the thread that was deleted earlier today: Thanks very much for spoiling the fun for the rest of us, hope you're satisfied

I wasn't aware that some big twist had been leaked, and thankfully I know nothing of it at all, but I have no sympathy for those Moffat is mad at. Preview screenings are not a right, they're a privilege, and if you abuse it we all have to bear the consequences. So much work has been put into making the series unforgettably surprising and a few selfish people seem to have spoilt it for the vast majority of DS, shameful.

It wasn't just a spoiler, it was the entire synopsis of the first eps. I doubt you'd want to know that much detail, and anyway it's been deleted now.
The post was made by someone who'd been to the preview screening which is why Moffat is (quite rightly) annoyed that they leaked the info.

Exactly. Spot on

No other TV show invite fans to previews. The BBC did it as a competition and a "thank you" to the fans

This was abused. Plain and simple

he isn't digging at the fans, hes getting at the numpties who cant help but give a blow by blow account of the episodes,on the whole i don't mind spoilers(minor ones that give next to nothing away,or give away people who are going to be in the show),but when someone sets out to spoil the entire 2 part start of a series thats not on,yes hes angry but if i was in his shoes and had devoted all that time into making something wonderful for it to spoiled i would be pissed off too

these Public Previews are a thank you to the fans, but if certain members of the public cant hold their water then it puts at jeopardy the chances of any future one,and that is a shame

Fact is that where it is available is irrelevant.

I work for a law firm dealing with very sensitive cases. I manage to refrain from telling people which local couples are getting divorced or who is filing for bankruptcy etc etc.

A little personal restraint is all thats needed people

The 'thread title' twist spoiler was annoying, although given the information, it just seems to spoil a major storyline given 10mins in, rather than anything, perhaps, long-lasting.

I hope public screening are banned, for the good of the series + fans. They tried it and it didn't work, one way or other... and that said person feels somewhat guilty for the reasoning.

Even when its a full blown spoiler (like a filming picture) i have no problem. But when you have been asked by the production team, of the program you supposedly love, not to say anything and yet the first thing you do is write down the entire synopsis...

That is messed up

Yes but the level of screening you had to get the job did not apply to the preview audience...

I think Moffat was a bit naive to thing the entire synopsis would not be posted up, let alone just the major spoiler.

Do they really need press screenings for Dr Who?

yeah this type of spoiler only gives 1 bit of an overall story so is fine

what screening? There are work experience kids who have the same level of screening. Sign a form "promising" not to tell lol

Yes they need press screenings to help build up the hype and get the blurbs written in mags like the radio times etc

Yes as most TV guides are produced weeks in advance,so reviewers need to see the episodes to write their reviews

Someone took the time to post a blow-by-blow account of the first two? That needs a critical level spoiler tag. Reading someone like that would be as bad a seeing a film before reading the book. Glad it was deleted.

ive seen plenty of films before reading the books that they came from, its never spoiled my enjoyment as most books tend to go into a greater detail than films can allow(due to budget, time constraints)

Another consideration is that spoilers like these are really no different to what the cast has to deal with.

Most of the time, they see the storyline in script form and don't get the chance to marvel at the finished production with the same element of surprise.

I'm not convinced it WAS written by a fan. Getting the Doctor's age so wrong is a bit of a giveaway (if we are talking about the same write up)

I tend to liken it to someone sneaking into your house 5 days before Christmas, ripping open all your presents and shoving them in your face so you've got nothing to look forward to on Christmas Day

Grr, I bet he's fuming at all the free publicity Who is getting on the web and magazines and papers and how people's anticipation levels are swelling ahead of the program.

God I bet the expected viewing figures must be driving him mad!!!

[Wasn't the whole of the very first episode of New Who leaked? You'd think they would have learned by now....grrrrr]

I'd liken it to someone detailing everything you have got for Christmas on a list headed "what you will get for Christmas", putting the list in a room where there is quite often information about what people will get for Christmas, putting a note on the door of the room suggesting it may contain information about what people get for Christmas....and just walking away safe in the knowledge that anyone who didn't want to know what they got for Christmas would be aware that they should avoid the room
