I didn't make the initial comments about Kris.
Yes he can play guitar piano/keyboard (though not to a great extent - he's not exactly Carlos Santana or Rick Wakeman or several other singing/non-singing guitar and piano/keyboard players) and yes he can sing but he's nothing you wouldn't hear at least once at any karaoke.

Apparently that song was rumoured for Adam two years ago, both on downloads week and judge's choice week, but it didn't happen then either and Adam is the only male AI contestant I can see being able to do that song justice.

Umm, yeah, he does - his range is broader, IIRC only Carly and Syesha had a broader range then him that year and he's got a lot more power - there was a reason, as the competition went on, that on group songs the sustained and bigger notes tended to be given to either David or Carly,
Anyhoo, being Australin didn't cost MJ his place. He went for 2 reasons,
1. He hadn't had a moment since HW, and he needed one, David at that point had 2, and was gaining ground.
2. He and David were sharing a fanbase, votes were being split between them. The night MJ went he had a competant performance, David was seen as in trouble, the vote splitting stopped and the vote went to David, which cost MJ his place - significantly David won every week after.
Don't get me wrong, I adore Papa Johns lots, like his voice lots, and many may prefer his voice to David's, but in no way shape or form is it stronger.

David Cook doesn't have a fraction of Michael John's vocal ability. David was very good in a lot of ways but he wasn't the best in the competition by a million miles - he merely had a Will Young moment when he took on Simon and it took him from below the radar to being noticed by the public - but his strained voice winning when there was someone with Michael's effortlessness in the competition was beyond a joke. It's not a matter of taste, it's a matter of quality. My abiding memory of that year was the question from so many critics and long-time bloggers - if it's supposed to be American Idol why are the best singers Australian and Irish?
How you can seriously say Carly isn't even in the top 10 female contestants on the show is laughable. The only contestant who has ever outdone her was Adam Lambert and he may wear make-up a lot of the time but he's definitely male. I really like Jordin and I think she's hugely underrated as a singer (good dexterity, lovely tone and instantly identifiable) but to say that she's a better singer than Carly is laughable and as for Kristy Lee Cook, she has to rate as among the worst to ever make it to the finals, male or female.
Dolly Parton could outdo any of the "Country" girls that have ever appeared on this show. Carrie may have more power and possibly equal reliability, and Brooke White could probably beat all of them for tone.
You can't "fix" being dated by giving them more current songs. Some singers can make a song that was released 50 years ago sound current and some can make a song that was released last week sound dated. Pia falls into the latter category. It can't be helped, it's in her. I'll probably be shot down for this but I speak from experience - it's "Sing for granny and grandad, darling" syndrome ....... it's a Mediterranean thing and sadly Stefano suffers from it too.
I don't see that men get away with that much more than women. Fantasia is hardly Tyra Banks, Carrie is beautiful but was on the chubby side, Jordin likewise though being very tall for a girl helps her carry her weight, and Kelly with the best will in the world is neither a stick insect nor anything other than plain facially.
You mentioned Haley getting in over Lauren Turner on looks .......... Haley was voted in by the public, not a wildcard, and Lauren Turner had a look of Ruth Lorenzo about her.............. she just isn't half the singer Ruth is.

Michael often sounded rather karaoke within his genre to me. David performed unique interpretations of a wide range of songs, his voice was strong and powerful.
I would say that David was more talented than both Michael and Carly, some may make a case for them being as talented as he is, but it's hard to argue that David is less so, although this is a matter of taste,
As for Carly, which performances of hers were consistent? I couldn't name one off the the top of my head, though she did have vocal power and potential. I disagree that Carly coulo take on Kelly and Jordin vocally, neither did she appear to have so much likeability, which could have cost her. To me, like Crystal, she seemed pretty much embarrassed to be there - and regardless of opinions on individual contestants, she wasn't playing in a weak field. Kristy probably wasn't the best singer even of the country girls, Carrie did have more power, although I wouldn't describe Brooke's tone as anything special. Kristy didn't seem to suffer from tuning issues, and related well to her songs. I could think of several contestants miles worse than her, off the top of my head, including at least two winners.
Sorry re: the Kris comments. I don't always check who's commented. I just assumed that because you'd sent me a long response to my long post, it was you lol. Kris probably isn't anything particularly unique or special, but how many people are, even in today's established music industry?
Pia didn't really attempt to fix being dated - the only uptempo song she attempted on the show was several years old - but even in today's music scene, you don't have to be Katy Perry, Lady Gaga or Bruno Mars to sell records. Pia seemed to identify herself with Celine Dion, and Susan Boyle has only very recently established herself in a similar market. Pia could potentially have a larger appeal and more longevity than Subo though, as she's more likely to appeal to younger fans. As for Stefano, he provwed this week that he can be genuinely current, remember, Jimmy has been picking him dated songs. It's hard to make When A Man Loves A Woman sound current, whoever you are - everything he's sung, he's sung brilliantly though.
I think the examples of females who aren't your typical glamourpuss are less extreme than the examples of men - for example, Jordin and Carrie ae closer in terms of having a marketable image to the likes of Kristy and Haley than Taylor Hicks or Casey Abrams are to looking as marketab;e as Stefano or Kris.
I would say Haley's voice is less than half Ruth's voice or Lauren Turner's, byt that Lauren Turner's voice is at least as good as Ruth's, and I liekd Ruth. Lauren's main problem was picking a relatively unknown song on top of having much less airtime than many of the others.
