Motorola Defy or San Francisco ?
JasonWatkins

Anyone got, or used, either one ?

I know the SF has a decent spec on paper, but I was wondering what it's like for day to day use?

The defy looks a bit tasty as well but the same question would apply - how is it for regular use?

I can only really choose between the two at the moment for various reasons so if anyone has, or had used, either then I'd be grateful for your thoughts

Defy is a better phone by far, Its a higher end phone, the San Fran is budget. Camera on the San Fran is dire.

camera has never really been a huge issue for me TBH. I'm really only looking for a phone to last me a year until my next upgrade and I'm angling towards the SF because there seems to be a lot more scope to flash it with custom roms.

And the price as well - don't really want to shell out for a defy and still be paying it back when I upgrade next may.

Hmmm .. shall have to decide

If your just looking for a phone for a year then the Defy would probably too expensive compared to the San Fran.

I've not used the San Fran so can't compare it to the Defy, but I like the Defy. It does everything I want it to do, have modded it with 2.2 froyo.

Battery life is pretty good especially if you mod it, which may be an issue with the San Fran.

another pluss point for the defy is that my one has survived being dropped in the bath, dropped the washing up bowl, and having a pint of beer spilt over it.

I was in a branch of CEX today and noticed a second hand defy on t-mobile for £150 quid, which is only £40 quid more than a brand new SF.

I'm only really looking due to being thoroughly hacked off with my iPhone .. which may require another thread ...

My friend bought the San Fransisco today and within a couple of hours (I had never done it before so I figured I'd better be careful!) I had it running Cyanogenmod 7 (based off Gingerbread) It felt much faster and more responsive with CM7

It's a very speedy little device which IMO should have been higher in price.

The only problem I can find with it tbh is the build quality. Then again you get what you pay for.

I did use opendesire on my old desire before it rebooted itself to death and I liked that a lot.

The various kernel tweaks and different radios got me some great battery life so I'm certainly keen on being able to do that if I do get a SF.

I'm going to try downgrading my IPhone to 3.1.3 first to see if that improves it any, but if it still runs like a dog then I'll eBay it and get a SF until next year

I have the Defy and it's a brilliant phone for the price I paid [£215].

However, if you are just looking for a phone to do you until you get a better one, I'd do with the San Fransisco. It's cheap and cheerful, but it'll do the job until such times as you get a btter handset.

No points spending a lot of money on a temporary phone. Although, if you can get one for £150 I'd grab it! For the extra £40 you get a hell of a lot more phone for your money.

check out the 'iPhone woes' thread I started here. I'd link to it but I'm using the iPhone to type this and I'd rather not throw it at the wall

I 'dived out of bed' the other morning, forgetting that before the 'nap' I had checked a message on my phone.

The San Francisco flew up and across the room landing on a hard wooden floor but survived pretty much unscathed. Of all our gadgets I certainly think it's phones that will get the most abuse.

The only problem is with Carphone warehouse/phones4u and the like is that they sell refurbished handsets as new.

Saw the OSF at Tesco for £89. Get one and flash a custom FroYo ROM (Sweedish Spring is best from MoDaCo.com). The OSF can also be unlocked for free. It will be perfect until next year.

i did notice in my local CEX that they're offering £150 exchange value on an O2 iPhone in "poor" condition, which is what mine would qualify as.

They're also selling a Nokia N97 for £150 quid so essentially I could do a straight swap

Why go FroYo when you can go Gingerbread?
