The first round-up of Hollywood buzz on the new pilots, many being shot just now.
The main focus is on ABC & NBC because CBS & FOX have very limited needs. Though FOX have 2 high profile drama projects.
JJ Abrams "Alcatraz" and the
Tim Kring (Heroes) -
Kiefer Sutherland,
"Touch".
20th TV (who produce Modern Family & How I Met Your Mother) have apparently got 2 hot comedies. For sister network FOX, The New Girl stars
Zooey Deschanel "as an unlucky-in-love teacher who moves in with three unruly guys". They're also behind one of the Parents Television Council's most hated new comedies,
Don't Hate The Bitch In Apartment 23. It's at ABC and the story is about "an earnest, honest, optimistic girl from the heartland (Dreama Walker) who, due to circumstances beyond her control, is forced to move in with Chloe (Krysten Ritter), a sexy, unstable New York City party girl who has the morals of a pirate." Both comedies have apparently been testing extremely well.
THE BRITS:
Outnumbered is dead at FOX... again.
Mixed news it seems for ITV.
Prime Suspect at NBC is an "early favorite based on the pedigree and the cast" - last year the pilot was abandoned due to casting issues but it was put back in development this season.
Identity has "fans at the network and ABC Studios" but "some question whether a straight ensemble procedural can work on ABC, which has struggled to launch one with Detroit 1-8-7 this season".
Others looking good;
NBC's
Steven Spielberg produced musical series "
Smash" - which Bob Greenblatt took with him from Showtime.
Period dramas "
Playboy" (NBC) and to a lesser extent, ABC's "
Pan Am".
ABC's "
Charlie's Angels" (surprise, surprise!) is described as solid, which seems pretty weak compared to the praise dished out for others. But it's always going to be a frontrunner.
Shonda Rhimes' new ABC drama,
Damage Control, about a crisis management consultant (based on a true story).
Of course, it's still very early and agents, publicists, studio execs, network execs, producers and directors are all desperately trying to hype their new shows. Even strong testing isn't a guarantee - FOX passed on Breakout Kings last year.
