The Walking Dead skewed a lot younger compared to other dramas, if it increases tonight no doubt series 2 will be picked up.

Will be interesting how The Hotel Inspector does tomorrow, the only real competition is The Reckoning.

What happened to Sunday Night, it is off due to Easter or is Seven resting it? ACA Sunday did okay, how long before Sunday Today Tonight?

ABC dont do Australian drama often, I think they have Crownies coming up but comedy wise they are very strong.

You can run BARB database 1 analysis to look at this.
So for instance, the 19:30 ITV1 showing of Coronation Street (friday 15th) shown at 20:30 on ITV1+1 attracted an ave audience of 117,000 (on ITV1+1) with 210,000 having watched at least 3 minutes (reach). Of these 210,000 who watched some of the +1 showing, only 11,000 (5.3%) of them had watched any (3 mins) of the parent channel broadcast on ITV1.

Clearly this relationship will change dependent on the time of viewing etc, but it's clear from this that the +1 is adding new unique viewers to the programme, and as you have rightly said, this is around 95%.

Interesting that TWD is a far better show than FlashForward and yet has not been hyped anywhere near as relentlessly by Five. That’s not to say they haven’t advertised it but FF was EVERYWHERE and was an abysmal programme so perhaps Five learned something from that saturation bombing approach to their US acquisitions.

Perhaps with its contnt Ch5 cant advertise TWD as much?

I assume that has they had a full network season of FlashForward, they'd spent a lot more on acquisition, compared to six episodes of TWD.

Also it was a UK premiere, whereas The Walking Dead has already had a successful airing on FX

Good news for Channel 5 and I'm pleased because it's a great show. I did predict as much yesterday. True Blood actually fell to 1.4m for its second episode on Channel 4, so it seems to be holding up better than that.

As for the promo, I guess the reason why it is more limited is this is effectively a second run in pay TV homes. This means the potential audience is always going to be smaller than a show like FlashForward. But it has still been very extensive, and they've spent money on a new ident and graphics package to enhance the experience for the viewer, so I have no complaints with how they have handled it.

And by the way, the massive promotion for FlashFoward did pay off, at least initially, with some huge ratings recorded. And for all the bashing it got on here (it was a daily ritual for a while for some posters to knock it) the ratings even at the end were well above what the likes of The Event are getting on Channel 4 now. Not that Channel 4 spent as much advertising The Event, but I wouldn't be surprised if they paid a similar figure to acquire it.

So can we please, stop making out as though FlashForward was a huge embarrassment for the network? It really wasn't- indeed the second episode secured Channel 5's 14th biggest audience of all-time! I'm sure obviously they were disappointed at how the ratings went down, but it could have been a lot worse. Even at the end it was still doing fine.

Eek! Britain really gripped by Royal Wedding fever. NOT.

Good rating for The Hotel. C4 don't normally do very well at all on Sunday nights so they'll be pleased with that performance.

I didn’t but it clearly was. How could it not be? The amount they paid vs the audience it attracted coupled with the hiatus mid-way through and the relaunch that didn’t work, all of these accompanied by Five’s out of control hype machine was like watching a slo-mo car-crash. It was as if the promotion was totally seperate from the programme with those making the trails not caring, perhaps not even watching the show they were advertising. There was no sense of proportion about it and all on it’s own the relentless overkill would have dissuaded people from watching it. Which was why I think the level of advertising for TWD has been less omnipresent.

......

I don’t see the content preventing Five from trailing it at any time as they can cut trails to suit any timeslot or age group. You could cut a trail for The Exorcist that toddlers could watch. Wouldn’t be representative of the film but the point stands.

They didn't "relaunch" as you put it FlashForward at all. They had to take a break due to the closeness to US transmission.

And they have been trailing TWD. Extensively in fact.

I feared the BBC1 doc wouldn't do that well, tbh. Up against the second hour of Lewis wasn't the best of scheduling.

Think this would have been better suited to BBC2, not BBC1. Then again, 4m isn't too catastrophic.

As for "not being gripped", I read yesterday that a ComRES poll suggested 48% of the nation intends to watch "some or all" of the wedding. 35% said they do not intend to watch any of it, and the rest were (i assume) don't knows.

So if that is reliable, then it kind of suggests a "high twenties" combined peak audience, possibly 30m.

Alright evening for BBC1, as high as expected I think for the Royals documentary. Lewis did well, rebounding back from last week's low. Better night for Channel 4, but still interestingly lost out to Channel 5 it seems. Very good primetime shares for the 'small 3' as well.

And Broadcast wins the "stating the obvious" award by saying the London Marathon is down y-o-y. I wonder why. The Cube did poorly again as well, a superb figure and share for Countryfile. I bet Phillip won't be smiling about that particular result on Twitter...

48% for "some or all" of a royal wedding is rather low I would say.

Many will watch a bit of it but clearly there is little real interest in this kind of thing any more.

I thought FlashForward was quite a success for Ch5. The ratings for the first half were excellent IIRC, and it was only the second half which was down, but the ratings were consistently above 1m, and it didn't really matter by that point anyway because it was going to be axed in the US.

And a good result for The Walking Dead-seems it was dented by the late finish and the snooker last week, because all dramas have an inevitable drop off, so that drop off has obviously been balanced out by new viewers. Also the big lead in from Spiderman would have helped-that franchise always performs well for Ch5.

A good night for Ch4 it seems. The Hotel was the first programme I've watched on Ch4 this year and it was a decent watch. Good scheduling with Country House Rescue afterwards too, which seemed to get a boost. Ch4 needs to be doing more of this imo, because once viewers watch CDWM at 7pm they should have their viewers 'locked in' till 10pm which programmes which appeal to the same viewer, hence why their audience was constant at ~2m from 7-10pm. The Civilisation programme was very randomly placed imo.

OK for Lewis-it recovered from last week, but I think it might be lower than last year still? It's very expensive to make too, but hopefully repeat showings, the length of the show, and abroad sales work in its favour.

They're not the only ones. Broadcast, in their infinite wisdom, have decided to compare Saturday's overnights with last year's (and 2009's) officials.

07:00 - Formula 1: The Chinese Grand Prix: 3.2m (43.7%)

Higher rating than the London Marathon. Hopefully the re-run was near the 2m mark. The live rating is exactly the same to 1.d.p. as 2009 and 2010.

Interesting to see the officials for last week's later today. Hopefully it was affected by the golf and will uplift more than usual.

The week before's episode timeshifted from 6.33m to over 7m.

With the six break 'overkill', timeshifting is the only way to watch ITV's '88m in a two hour slot' dramas.

The last series averaged 6.8m but STV aired it, whereas they aren't showing this series. Had they aired it last night's episode would have got ~6.9m which is in line with last year so it did well. It may be expensive to make but it's cost per hour can't be that much more than standard ITV drama due to their tariffs so it'll be fine.

Can you explain how six breaks are overkill? I'd expect a two hour show to have seven breaks myself:

- 20:15 (break 1)
- 20:30 (break 2)
- 20:45 (break 3)
- 21:00 (break 4)
- 21:15 (break 5)
- 21:30 (break 6)
- 21:45 (break 7)

Is there something I'm missing?
