Well done for the snooker, 6.4 million is excellent and has disproved the myth that this sport is a minority sport nowadays. I can now see the BBC being very keen to renew the rights.

are the rights up now (May 2011) or was a deal done subsequent to this?

£18m for 5 years works out at about £3.5m a year which is not huge by tv rights standards

A couple of stories doing the rounds today that might be of interest:

- According to The Sun, Channel 4 is bringing Shipwrecked back for yet another series. That show seems to have more lives than a cat!

- Broadcast is reporting that Jason Manford is leaving C4's 8 Out of 10 Cats to front new ITV series Show Me The Funny.

I don't see how it's any worse than lining the pockets of Endemol by ordering such treats as Don't Scare The Hare and 101 Ways To Lose A Gameshow.

I'm sure they'll have some kind of "out" from the SYTYCD contract. It would be unusual (and just plain thick) to tie yourself into a multi-year contract for a new show which didn't have brilliant ratings last year anyway.

EDIT: Speaking of Simon's, the other one is with Ant & Dec today at the launch of a new show (DS on Twitter). The press conference for The Apprentice was also done earlier so lots of TV news later today.

Interesting to see how the soaps dealt with the Wedding Friday.

EastEnders cleverly edited in pictures on Friday from earlier that day to make the cast appear to be watching live.

The ITV shows were less dynamic with the odd poster and reference included.

Neighbours recorded a special scene of two cast members watching the live event and commenting nicely. Only for the UK transmission as the rest of the episode aired in Australia a month ago.

Oh, and a heads up from Radio Times...Atlantis, the drama doc next Sunday on BBC 1 has a new theory for why the island sank, Forget earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Apparently mutant baby insect goo was to blame.

Or, I assume so, since Alison Graham previews it (page 64) with a discussion of the amazing properties of the sticky 'larva' that gets everywhere aside from one cast members cleavage.

(One assumes she meant 'lava', of course, but the former might have given ITV viewers a choice other than watching Vera - with the image of a new twist on the bush tucker trials from 'Im A Minoan get me out of here')

I saw a trailer for the Apprentice on BBC last night and they said it was starting Tuesday the 10th, I thought it was going to go in the Wednesday slot again?

It starts on Tuesday, the second episode is on the next night, and the remaining episodes will be shown on Wednesdays (maybe apart from the final which tends to be shown on Sundays).

The Snooker is the best rating to come from last night with a 6m+ peak which in turn has dented the ITV1 soaps. EE tops the day and around 0.1-0.2m should be knocked off the ITV soaps as those figures inc. +1. Case Sensitive started well. Pretty much in line with how I thought it would rate.

...and we've got a top 10 for Sony TV+1 but not for Sony TV itself.

From what I can tell it's a slow start for the channel with a weekly reach of just 452,000 for its second full week on air.

New BBC snooker contract already signed, starting next season.

- 3 tournaments per season - no World Open (formerly Grand Prix)

- No price officially reported but Snooker Scene (edited by Clive Everton) suggests approx £3m per year vs £4m per year for the contract just ending.

Funnily enough arent all sports generally "minority" until its a big final? World Cups, Horse Racing, F1 etc

I think the first Apprentice will get 6.5million but drop to 5.5 after.

They're currently having the press conference for Simon Cowell's new game show for ITV. Red Or Black will be hosted by Ant & Dec and will take place over 7 consecutive nights in the summer. Looks like they're giving away £1 million each night.

Gosh I think it will be lower, it never really took off last time around, and I think the ratings were only OK?

I think it would be madness for the BBC not to get this as it is something they cover well and their low key style of presentation is ideal. 6.4 million is nearly what Emmerdale got last night.

More signs of barrel scraping at Channel 4 if this is the best they can come up with, a clapped out show like Shipwrecked. Now I thought their creative renewal meant an end to reality shows and a bigger emphasis on drama and comedy. However, the Sun isn't always right.

Didn't take them long to realise the mistake in axing Big Brother...

And moving swiftly onto a chart that neither of the two above shows will be challenging this year... the Top 20!
