It's all as if they are being cool and anti-establishment by saying they'd "rather poke themselves in the eye than watch".
How typical this forum is, I'm not sure.”
It reminds me of the build-up to the VE50* celebrations in 1995 and the Golden Jubilee in 2002, both celebrated with extra bank holidays, public celebrations and wall to wall TV coverage, and both during hot spells as it happened. The sneering, Guardianista, metropolitan view was that the younger generations wouldn't give a toss, and frankly, most people would be out enjoying the extra holiday and it would all be a big flop. But both were massive triumphs, and genuine national events celebrated across the generations, with millions out on the streets of London and huge TV audiences.
I can't remember how VE50 rated, but the Golden Jubilee attracted massive daytime ratings for BBC1 all day, and less so for ITV1, and the culmination of the Bank Holiday Monday event was the Party at the Palace, which had been written off weeks in advance as likely to be embarrassingly naff and a huge turn-off. It attracted up to 15m at its peak, and would have averaged not far off that had ITV not scheduled Coro St against it.
(* - for younger readers, VE50 was the commeration of the 50th anniversary of the end (in Europe) of the Second World War.
Which we won...

I think the street parties will be in the afternoon/evening after the wedding.
It would be a bit daft having a street party to celebrate the event, but schedule it for the same time and miss it!

I have to say that there seems to be regional variations as well as age variations in the royal wedding interest. I get the feeling that rural areas are more interested (especially up north, than are urban areas). I've been up north recently and there seems to be quite a bit of interest out in the sticks.”
I drove past a council estate in Manchester today where the residents had Union Flags and St George's crosses out en masse.
Of course, they may be holding a BNP or EDL rally...
