I know where you're coming from, but in ratings terms EE, CS, Emmerdale aren't the top three rated shows on an annual basis. I would say the the Cowell shows, Strictly and IAC have rated higher in the last year. People seem to want entertainment now, maybe because of the gloomy economic and world situation.

so the 10 million who watched the show on Monday & Tuesday, are some how differnt to the 10 million who watched this weeks BGT?

Just because other shows are out rating EE or Corrie, it does not mean they are failing.

The only failing soap that I can see is Hollyoaks.

Besides as ive alreay said BGT is not the same as Corrie, and its not on 52 weeks a year, like Corrie. What else on ITV can get 7 million viewers 6 times a week?, ok there is the BGT final week, but that is only 1 week, it cant do that every week.

I don't think Alesha is a good idea at all. I agree that Lily Allen would be good but whether she'd do it is another matter. The Sun mentioned Kelly Rowland yesterday who I think would be quite good. If Dannii doesn't come back (possible as she hasn't agreed anything yet) then maybe they could have both. Louis, Kelly, Lily and a new male judge. Gary Barlow seems most likely for that now. His voice is just so dull though. He needs to do something about that if he does get the gig. I'd have preferred Buble but I'm not sure how likely that is now. I can't think of anyone else who could do it off the top of my head but I'm sure there are others.


Interesting that you've said that as I thought it was much better than last week and possibly the best of the series so far. The kid dancer and the guy at the end were both really good. The semis will be interesting as so far I can think of about 20 acts, which leaves another 20 for the next 3 shows, which will be difficult. No doubt there will be a few acts we've only seen small snippets of again. That's OK if they spread them out well but last year they dumped them all in one show and it was dire. Hopefully they won't do that again. Cowell returning will boost it but I really don't liker the 7:30pm slot.

Back to ratings, and BGT did very well last night and proved that it's holding up fine. Doctor Who also did well and should be above 8m after timeshift. Sing If You Can bounced back a bit and did OK last night but it doesn't deserve to come back, but it did beat the disaster that is SYTYCD. The BBC have definitely made the right call in demoting it to 5:40pm. Life Stories did alright but I expected a bit more due to the Hoff being on.

To show how the ratings have changed over the last 10 years. Ten years agp the three big soaps topped the ratings, now it's three talent/dancing shows. However, I wouldn't say the soaps are failing, just they're not as popular as they were and people's tastes have changed to an extent.

This is very true, you can easily watch it once, open mouthed, wondering how no-one at the BBC noticed how awful it is.

In regards to XF, the audition dates have been released here which would rule Gary out of around half the shows due to TT's tour. Would they want that for his first series?

Dannii will also miss some shows again (if back) due to AGT

Also, they're doing the london auditions in the O2 Arena this year as opposed to Excel.

I know it sounds a bit like a conspiracy theory, but is TXF USA being touted as a replacement for American Idol, which is falling in the ratings and has been on the go for 9 years. I know the British version of American Idol, Pop Idol, was replaced by TXF in 2004 and TXF has been a bigger rated show.

Although I'd personally prefer an 8-10pm slot, to say scheduling at 7.30pm is "ridiculous" is quite frankly, well, ridiculous, when virtually every weeknight the top rated show of the days airs at, well, 7.30pm.

Yes, it'll clash with EE a bit but it's much better for TV that a channel schedules to suit their programming rather than to suit the opposition. If the BBC and ITV would do the same with some other shows we wouldn't have the very stagnant pre-9pm schedules we have now.

I criticise Beeb output and scheduling when I feel the need arises, as regulars on this thread will know. I just don't think DSTH is the most appalling piece of crap ever shown on British television. I appreciate I'm in a minority of one, but there we are.


OK-ish for DW in the circumstances, but a waste. With the weather back to normal, and a slightly later slot for the rest of the summer half-series, then 7.3m might prove to be the low point. Sadly, the Beeb bigwigs will feel the big timeshifts will vindicate their stupid scheduling decision.

As for BGT, there won't be many weeks where a Cowell talent contest ranks below what was effectively "Songs of Praise Live" and the BBC One O'Clock News in the ratings - so we must savour this latest magnificent week of official ratings for all it is worth.

Last year the officials for BGT on ITV1 on the equivalent weekend was 11.72m. There's one for the Daily Mail. It's rating down year-on-year by 1.5m!!

Of course this is being selective with the figures. This year ITV1+1 exists. The problem with +1 channels is we can't be sure how many of its viewers would have watched the regular screening if the +1 channel didn't exist. With BGT I imagine that would be quite a high percentage.

Also D.M.N, I don't suppose you know the official figures for ITV1 HD. I notice from the BARB web-site that one year ago it had a rather low 127,000 and was only the channel's fourth highest ratings, even trailing Joanna Lumley's Nile (which admittedly is exactly the sort of programme that HD is perfect for.)

Incidentally Dr Who is 1.2m down y-on-y.

I think there are lots of reasons (and ways) people watch programmes and they're not all related to the quality of the show. It may be incredulity at the sheer awfulness of the programme, it may just be on in the background etc .

To me this explains why a clearly broken programme like Daybreak can still attract 800K viewers who apparently don't particularly like it.

Or maybe they could be hardcore ITV viewers who would watch it anyway, same as Hare must attract those who mostly watch the BBC. There are still a few million viewers who cling on to this BBC1/ITV1 loyalty.
