It may not seem like a big deal but it just seemed nonsensical to present data which didn't add up to 100% with no explanation of why that was the case.

The new presentation both resolves this and makes good sense so thanks again for your help in fixing this.

We're comparing apples with pears on some of these though, because BBC3, BBC4, CBBC and CBeebies only air part of the day. In reality, CBBC/BBC3 and CBeebies/BBC4 make up just 2 channels. The following figures make the position for the two BBC digital channels look more respectable, and at the risk of causing rzt to choke on his supper , in my view constitute the fairer comparison:

CBBC-BBC3: 2.6%
CBeebies-BBC4: 1.9%
ITV2: 2.7%
ITV3: 2.2%
ITV4: 1.3%

And if the Beeb flipped round the pairings, so CBeebies married up with BBC3, then that channel would have a 3% share.


I think the RVP had been going for many years before Cowell took on the self-appointed "new talent finding" role for the UK, and indeed the planet.

I concur. An unacceptably depressing line-up for one of the flagship slots of the week. The Beeb may feel the Wootton Bassett documentary fulfilled some kind of PSB purpose, and if the programme needed to be made, then I dare say a 9pm slot on BBC2 would have been the right one. Not prime-time flagship slot BBC1, with Panorama having already eaten up half a worthy hour of primetime.

Someone, possibly Trickytree1979, posted that the reason they are separate is that there are differences in advertising between the channels, therefore they need to be kept apart.

I posted the figures mainly so that people saw the y-o-y changes. Obviously people are aware that CBBC/CBeebies/BBC3/BBC4 only air part of the day and that affects their All Day Share. But 'CBBC-BBC3' is not billed as one channel, and so rightly BARB have treated them as separate channels (as they are) and even the Beeb quotes the shares as how BARB do it rather than bundling them together: for e.g. you don't see the BBC posting in their press releases the BBC3/CBBC combined shares as if they're just one channel. Also at least by having them posted the way I've done it, you can see clearly if CBBC or BBC3 have improved or declined, whereas if you bundled CBBC and BBC3 together, you wouldn't know which bit is doing better, worse, up y-o-y, down y-o-y etc.

So, we're now 8 episodes into this latest season of MasterChef Australia. How's it doing up to now?

Basically it's stable year-on-year, despite the growth we've seen in the digital channels and the introduction of afternoon repeats. So far so good then for Ten.

Masterchef will be around for a few more years, I'm surprised Seven haven't poached it like they did with Kath and Kim and Thank God You're Here.

Still behind Negus though on Ten. The whispers of them being swapped were short lived.

The talk of the swap was when the TEN Evening News aired at 6.30pm, for which Neighbours would usually beat the news. George Negus, who was at 6pm was getting low ratings and the decision to move him to 6.30pm has seen an increase in his ratings.

It's expected to be broadcast in HD later this year.

Well, you say that, but I used to have an issue of TV Guide, the Sky equivalent of the Radio Times, back when every channel had its own, from 1990, where they'd also present highlights of the terrestrial channels, and it was the week Stars In Their Eyes started and they really slagged it off, saying it was the stupidest format they'd ever heard and it was a new low for TV. Of course it turned out to be one of the best-loved entertainment shows in recent history. (Although why a magazine aimed at those who had Sky in 1990 should be turning its nose up at that, I don't know, given what Sky One was showing at the time.)

Don't Scare The Hare is a rotten old show but it could have worked had it been executed better, it sounds no worse than Total Wipeout on paper and that works.

As for Pets Win Prizes, Danny Baker was interviewed on Sky Arts the other day and said he loved doing that show, he helped create the format and devise some of the games, and he really enjoyed it. Dan said he wanted to make "It's your licence fee at work!" his catchphrase and he said it every show, and the Beeb always cut it out. And I thought it was fantastic, Dan sent it all up and it was really subversive, it was hilarious. Dan also said the audiences loved it, the climax of the game where cockerels were challenged to be the first to crow got the loudest round of applause he'd ever heard.

Dan said he was then called in for a meeting about series two and they said they were planning a change to the presenters and said they were thinking of dropping Terry Nutkins as Dan's sidekick. Then two days later the Mirror phoned him up and asked what he thought about being replaced by Dale Winton, and he was really depressed.

And under Dale it wasn't very good, it was being taken seriously, which wasn't right. But I'd love to see a Dan episode again, it was fantastic,


I don't think Red or Black will be much of a hit, actually, I know Deal or No Deal is random but you get an hour in the contestant's company and you get to know about them and actually care about what they win. Just seeing one person in a thousand winning something at random hardly seems very exciting. It's like Grab The Ads on Takeaway, when they win it never seems very special because you only met them two minutes ago and they could fluke their way to winning.


Didn't help The Big Big Talent Show when it was the prize on that, did it?

Correct. Advertising is actually the same but the regional geography is different.
For example.if you live in ITV Yorkshire, you will receive ITV Yokshire SD but in HD, depending on which platform you have, you will receive either ITV1 London or ITV1 Granada (London on DTT, Granada on DSAT and DCAB). Clearly any Yorkshire commercials sold in ITV Yorkshire should not have commercial impacts reported against viewing to ITV1 HD in that area because the delivery of ITV1 HD isn't ITV Yorkshire. This is primarily why they have to be reported separately so that commercial impacts (effectively the currency for which commercial airtime is traded) are correctly and accurately reported against the audiences for which they are sold. This was a stipulation under CRR for ITV1 HD launch.

As a user it's a little annoying but c'est la vie. With regard to BBC1 HD, they don't suffer the same problems with regulation of commercial airtime (for obvious reasons) and so they are able to budle it all together.

Strangeways did very good, better than expected. Glee scored high, and as for Made In Chelsea? I expected better.

I wasn't expecting The Hotel Inspector to beat Ramsay, especially to that extent. A very good result for Channel 5.

Elsewhere, good ratings for Strangeways and ITV1's late movie. BBC One struggled.

Excellent start for Strangeways - almost a million higher than how Wormwood Scrubs rated last year in a similar slot, and it must be the channel's best documentary rating in ages. Wootton Basset sounded like the sort of show which would rate in the 2's/low 3's so I'm not surprised with that rating. I'm surprised by how low Gordon Ramsey's show rated - I know his shows have declined but just 1.2m is poor and C4 usually gets more viewers than that at 9pm for programmes which I imagine aren't as costly. The Hotel Inspector did well to beat Ramsey by that margin. Bad start for both There's Something About Josie and Made in Chelsea - can't remember Channel 5 falling as low as that in that slot in ages. As for Made in Chelsea, given the amount of promotion it had and that it had a Glee lead-in I'm sure C4 were hoping for something better than that. It didn't do much better than how 'Great British Hairdresser' was doing in that slot recently, and that had a fraction of promotion MIC had.

Really? Extraordinary People had just 676k two weeks ago. It probably performed similarly last week but it wasn't reported.

Okay so those were repeats, but to say they haven't fallen that low in that slot for "ages" is untrue.

To be honest it came in about where I expected, in line with Peter Andre's ITV2 show. I doubt they had much higher hopes for it. It's there to drum up some early interest in Big Brother ahead of the launch.

As you say, Extraordinary People was a repeat. I should've said "for a new show", I don't seem to remember C5 falling as low as 0.7m in that slot for ages. Maybe I'm wrong - I don't record all the figures - but 0.7m does seem low compared to how Channel 5 usually do. Also, I said bad "start" because I can't imagine the show increasing increasing its viewership next week, as most new programmes go down after episode one, so it may well be down to 0.6m next week. If that's the sort of audience Channel 5 were expecting from it, then I don't think the show really should've been commissioned in the first place and I think it's going to be pretty ineffective in terms of drumming up early interest in BB anyway.

Very good rating for Strangeways last night, didn't expect near 6m for it.

I agree, it looks that way

It just feels to me like a bit of a cheap shot to make when the programme rated in line with or even above how this kind of programme normally rates and wasn't even that low for the slot's standards. Let's not forget that this time last year on Monday 10th May 2010, Channel 5 had just 0.2m (1.3%) watching in the same slot for an edition of JLC's chat show. So one could argue C5 is up 250% year-on-year with Josie!

I also think that in the context of last night they will be more pleased with The Hotel Inspector rallying to a series high and beating Gordon Ramsay's new programme on Channel 4 by just under 3 share points than disappointed by Josie performing about the same as the Extraordinary People repeats previously.
