The Gadget Show continues to fail, after what was a better episode than normal, the show needs some fixing.

It's not a "cheap shot" at all. You're just being overly defensive here and making a big deal about something small which I said. I saw it got 0.7m, that's a low rating by C5's usual standards and a couple of hundred thousand lower than what I expected, so I thought it was a bad start IMO. Not terrible, not a disaster, but just a bad start - that's all. It's not a big deal, it's just a 3-part series not a particularly important 13-episode series so I doubt executives at C5 are going to lose any sleep over it. I was just making a passing comment on how I thought it rated last night. If you want to do year-on-year comparisons with one of the lowest rated 10pm shows ever to be shown on Channel 5 and use that to make last night's rating look positive, that's up to you, but I won't be falling for that. As for saying it rated similarly to how other programmes of that genre do, yes that's right, but those programmes are shown on digital channels like ITV2/E4 which have a lower reach than a terrestrial channel like Channel 5 so I'd have expected it to do a bit better than those shows. I agree about The Hotel Inspector, it was a good rating compared to how it's done so far this series. I even said so in my other post that it did as well as it did to be that much ahead of Gordon Ramsey's Great Escape.

Almost 6m for a factual programme when every other channel is showing factual is great for ITV. I was expecting it to do well, but just under 5m. It rounded off a good night with Corrie performing decently and Emmerdale back over 7m and still pulling in that solid 35% share.

Awful night for Ch4 really. Nothing seems to perform well in the Monday 8pm slot and that's an awful figure for Gordon. His shows definitely need to be axed now and replaced with something else, because he just isn't a ratings puller anymore.

Nice to see The Hotel Inspector rebound, but the shows around it didn't perform very well. Concerning for TGS to be below 1m again, but with the Josie programme I fully expected it to be sub 1m. She's just not a huge personality and only her BB fans will know her. On the plus side it's been a while since H&A made that 1m mark and I didn't think we'd see it again until the Autumn/Winter-very close to Neighbours too.

Sorry if you feel that way, I'm just being honest about how I see it. You're right, it's not that big a deal, but I'm pulling you up on it in the same way you do to me occasionally when you disagree with my analysis or I get things wrong. No harm is meant by it, and I still consider you one of my few friends on here, but it's important to keep things as factual as we can.


It's not that low though, that's what I'm trying to get across to you. It had a 4.1% share. Channel 5's most recently weekly share according to BARB was 4.2%.


Oh, come on. I always make year-on-year comparisons! Anybody who follows my posts would know that. It's not my fault that JLC's turkey of a show happened to air in that slot last year.


Although, look at how E4's high profile new series Made in Chelsea performed in comparison:

There's Something About Josie 719,000 (4.1%)

Even allowing for the slightly later start and finish for the former, it was still a fairly comprehensive win for Josie.

True, but typically Channel 5 does better in that 10pm slot than the BARB all-day average. They usually get 5%+ in that slot for new programmes and that 4.1% would've been one of the lowest in that slot for a new programme in quite a while.


I understand. But sometimes doing y-o-y slot comparisons like that can give a flawed result. Even if a show had 0.3m in that slot yesterday, it'd have been up +50% which sounds good, if you put it like that, but in actual fact the rating would be dire. Similarly I don't think a +250% y-o-y increase is anything to shout out about when the comparative level is so (unusually) low. If it had been a +250% y-o-y increase vs. the same show, then that would be amazing. But comparing it to a show which had some of the worst ratings ever seen at 10pm for the channel, it's a completely different story.


Yeah, I think Made in Chelsea started pretty badly given the publicity it had. A bigger headache for Channel 4 because it's 8 episodes rather than 3 like Josie's show. I think Made in Chelsea will be shedding viewers next week, for sure.

The hotel inspector always seems to do better when there is no tough competition on BBC 1, good night for Channel 5 last night. Channel 4 is still looking a bit stale at the momment

The last new programme to rate worse in the 10pm slot that I can find would be Justin Lee Collins: Turning Japanese which pulled in about 780k but only 3.3% of the audience at 10pm on the 3rd and 10th of February respectively, so not too long ago, even if we go by the criteria of "new."

In the context of last night, it was a bit of a non story. As I said it rated in line with (in fact higher) than the Extraordinary People repeats which previously occupied the slot.


I appreciate all of that. But in a way it was worth noting as it highlights that Monday at 10pm is a slot which is often problematic for C5, and shows how much worse it could have been. A hell of a lot worse.

As it was it wasn't a bad result IMO, rather a mediocre and expected one. Anyway I'll shut up about it now, I must sound like a broken record.

I really think Channel 4 and its digital channels are badly in need of a huge overhaul. Their whole schedule seems dominated by a few tired shows and yoof programmes like Made in Chelsea that stiffed. I know this might sound controversial and might not help ratings at first, but why not make the main channel like it was in the Jeremy Isaacs era?

Good for the soaps last night - EE & CS ought timeshift to over 9 million. Surprised by Strangeways rating - I understand there wasn't much else to watch last night, maybe people are curious what it is like to go to prison - very similar to Wormwood Scrubs though.

I saw a few minutes of Josie on Loose Women (?) promoting her C5 show and that was enough to put me off watching her permanently - the vast majority of viewers won't have a clue who she is either.

Just noticed The Apprentice launches tonight BBC1 9.00pm - ought be good for a 6 million launch, - there is some competition but it is not major - Secret Millionaire and CSI. Unsure how Home Is Where The Heart Is will do for ITV maybe 3 million - not exactly must see tv though.

Channel 4 needs some structure as do all the channels - it is mostly UK programmes now, whereas in the past it relied on Friends,ER,Cheers, Frasier, etc. They have lost BB and a lot of the rating pullers eg. Ramsay & Oliver have lost much of their appeal. Maybe C4 need to go back to having 9pm movies or original drama rather than so much reality or documentaries.

It's a shambles with a couple of shows shown almost non stop. Their creative renewal means even more DOND, CDWM, Location Location and now they're reviving Shipwrecked for the third time. This is like Big Brother on a South Sea Island but without the media attention and has been scrapped twice previously as it is so bad. I still think Channel 4 had a get out clause last year, saving CBB, which would have garnered them 3 million viewers a night. ( The summer one was well past it, but the celeb one wasn't doing too badly).

I don't think you're being entirely fair on this one. I don't half criticise the 'BSI' from time to time, but to slate them for last night is ridiculous. BBC One are meant to be show occasional primetime current affairs docs, and this one seemed entirely worthy. It was never going to rate well, but thats PSB for you. Unless you think the channel should become wall-to-wall populist drama and 'factual' entertainment, then you have to take these figures every now and again.

Are you really suggesting that the BBC should be aggressively scheduling to try and knock any new ITV show - even a simple 3 part prison fly-on-the-wall - out of the water? Regardless of what it does to their own scheduling plans?

Looks like ITV1 and Channel 5 benefitted from the lack of competition from BBC One and Channel 4, Gadget Show I think was hit by the football but was still up from last two weeks.

The Apprenctice should do well tonight, does anyone if the Junior version is returning later in the year?

I'm not surprised that Strangeways performed really well. If I remember rightly, ITV had a similar sort of documentary set in a prison called Holloway which aired a year or two ago on Tuesday nights and that performed well, compared to other Tuesday 9pm documentaries.

It seemed to be advertised a lot and the promotion paid off. I can see it staying above 4.5m + for the rest of its run.

I'm shocked to see Made in Chelsea only get around 500,000 viewers. I thought what with the recent success of The Only Way is Essex, this show would have been closer to a million.

The soaps did well, especially Emmerdale which manages to stay strong with a 35% share and over 7 million viewers.

Funny you say that, on the Monday morning it had 376,000 which I think must be one of the lowest figures ever for that slot on an ITV1 weekday outside of Christmas.

Ah yes, forgot about it being a Bank Holiday. I guess the breakfast shows didn't get the boost they would have done had that been a normal working day.

Hello, Charnham, I do remember in 1993 BBC Two showing re runs of Pertwee and Baker adventures on a Sunday morning and correct me if I'm wrong, some Pertwee stories were shown in the winter of 1992/93 on Friday nights opposite Coronation St. I couldn't imagine the ratings being too high, possibly about 3 million, but excellent for the fans.

I really dont know much about Doctor Who prior to the new series, it seems ive missed a number of chances in my life to get into Doctor Who, not least the 8th Doctor TV movie.

I would not be against BBC 4 showing some more Classic Who.

It ended in 1989 and then was absent for 16 years. I think the BBC re runs in the early nineties were like a bribe to the fans who had become very vocal about DW being cancelled. However, the last 2 years of the eighties season had seen DW placed against Coronation St, when this attracted 17 million viewers, and the last season struggled with 4 million viewers.
