A Thread for Guitar Players
I play guitar myself and other guitar players I know are some of the nicest people I know. I say to other guitarist who are clearly miles better than me 'You are so good and so better than me' but the reply is always 'no way man you are just at a differnet level you are no worse or no better than me'. We all have our own style of playing. I absolutely ignore chord structures and play what sounds good to me, 'Sea Sick Steve' plays with 2 strings and does not sound that bad
In fact he is stunning. After alot of thinking here is a list of my top 5 guitar players: 1: Jimi Hendrix. It's a done thing. He broke boundries and he was also a great songwriter. You don't get that often, a great guitarist and songwriter in one. I still listen to Hendrix and think 'How the hell does he do that???' 2: Steve Vai. It's Steve Vai for gods sake. I'll also include Satriani as he taught Vai but Vai ended up being Vader ![]() 3: Eddie Van Halen. I LOVE Van Halen (Dave lee Roth). Eddie looks worse for wear now but still can play the 6 string. 4: Chris Robinson - The Black Crows. I know a bit contraversial that one but he's a great modern day blues player and I love the Crows and I love Da Blues 5: Randy Rhodes (RIP). King of the 'squeal' which I still have a hard time with perfecting. I know it's a harmonic from touching the string with your thumb. I have sat there for hours trying to get it right. sometimes I'll get it but not very often

In all lists of great guitar players you have to have the man who got so many started playing that fantasic instrument:
Bert Weedon Hank Marvin Nick Barrett from Pendragon The Ventures lead man ( I think his name was Nokie Edwards) Bo Winberg from The Spotnicks so many more though |

Someone will correct me on this 'The Black Crows' actually has an 'e' on the end. I am a fan of the band and I am always confused to if there should be an 'e' on the end but my friend assures me it is 'The Black Crowes'. I am so lame

Everything depends on what you class as a great guitar player. To some it's just technical ability, and by those standards then Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen are some of the greats. To others it's more about soul, creativity, innovation and I'm more in that group, with choices like Hendrix, Clapton, Page, SRV, Robert Johnson, Eddie Van Halen.
And as for my guitar skills, I'm quite meh... been playing for a few years but only really been playing daily (or atleast on a regular basis) for like a year, year and a half. And the majority of the time, I play my acoustic rather than my electric, although I'm starting to play my leccy quite a bit now. I'm more a chords/rhythm kinda guy than a solo/improv guy, but that's probably because I don't quite know how to solo or improv at all. My guitars are: Acoustic - Fender CD-60 and an Epiphone DR-100, and my electric is an Ibanez 220-FM.
