Brown Sauce
Besides the fact it's brown WHY do we call it brown sauce? Does it not have a flavour that we can call it?
I have friends in town from the US at the moment and had to explain that brown sauce is similar to steak sauce (which it isn't) but there was no other way I could describe it. I know there are different types of brown sauce like fruity, tangy etc etc but I couldn't explain what it tastes like! |

its got its own distinct flavour, one that doesnt taste of anything else, so really there is nothing else to call it other than "brown". Go buy a bottle to give to your friends then they can see what it like rather than you trying to describe it

I don't know about a name for the flavour, all I do know is that HP sauce from a (preferably glass) bottle is one of the finest things to pass between my lips, EVER.
![]() Of course I hasten to point out that that is IMO. |

This is so spooky I was mulling why e call it brown sauce the other day! Didn't come to any conclusions other than because it's brown and has a really unique flavour that can't be described / compared to anything else - bit like Worcestershire sauce in that respect.
I call tomato sauce ketchup when it's supermarket bought and red sauce when describing the vinegary watered down rubbish from chippies. |

I do however love the word catsup. It reminds me of one of the funniest scenes ever in the US comedy, King of Queens. |

Reminds me of a time I was in a McDonalds in France, had ordered our meals in my best french and was asked which sauce I wanted, I replied "Tomate" and was greeted by a blank stare. It occured to me that the english association of Ketchup = Tomato Sauce is not universal. Quickly replied Ketchup and all was sorted.
