Hello, i have recentley purchased an i Phone but for some reason i am getting NO SERVICE in the top left hand corner where it should be giving me the 02-uk logo. I have reset all network settings but still have no joy. Can anybody give me some advice on how to get connected? Thankyou. It is an i Phone 3gs all firmware and i tunes software is up to date also.

Is the phone unlocked?

Did it work before on the same network?

Tried another SIM?

Have you tried selecting the network manually from Settings>Carrier ?

Yes the phone is unlocked. Also have done the things that you suggest. Still no joy.

Hmm so it doesn't work with ANY SIM?

Tried rebooting (keep both buttons pressed for 10 secs approx)?

Sounds that way. What network was the phone originally on? Is this an official unlock?

Where did you buy the phone and was it new. I have a horrible feeling the answer is going to be you've bought it off ebay in which case the news isn't going to be good

I got the phone from 02. Its a reconditioned one. They have tried to solve the problem but just thought i would ask here because i know people are very good with advice here. So before sending i back just wondered if any of you could help solve the situation. So thanks.

If you bought it from O2, definitely take it back. It's not fit for purpose, reconditioned model or not.

Well thats good news. The symptoms you were describing sounded like it had been blacklisted which can happen with some dodgy sellers on ebay who sell the phone, then claim it was lost/stolen and claim on insurance.

As the other poster says, refurb or not it should be fit for purpose so take it back to O2 and watch they dont try and fob you off

Obvious answer I know, but we sometimes forget to check the absolute basics when thinking the issue much be much more complicated.

Have you:

Checked Airplane mode isn't turned on?
Ensured that celular data is turned on and data/3G is enabled
Have you attached to iTunes with your sim in order for courier settings to download and install automatically?

I get this message if I have 3g enabled. As soon as I disable it the service comes back.

Have you got a 3G SIM in the phone? If it's an old SIM you have carried over to the iphone then it might not be 3G compatible. Or, you could be in an area with a very poor 3G signal. When I was in Devon on holiday last year I had to shut off 3G just to be able to use the phone as the signal was so poor.

You'll probably find if you got to a big city your phone will work just fine with 3G switched on (assuming you have the 3G SIM card that is).

This happened to me once with my old iPhone 3G. I had to get a new sim card. If you go into an O2 store they will give you a new one on the spot.
