If you know why did you state incorrectly SD is 480P ? it's not.

If they don't already have a Freeview PVR then it would make sense to get an HD Freeview+. You can get Freeview+ HD for around £200 (I haven't done an extensive search so you may get better).

I would stay that way as well if I was you. If my plasma was not given to me as a gift I would have still been using my CRT. It is still in my bedroom for when the Plasma go belly up.

That is why I will not buy Blu-ray disks and only rent them, if the plasma goes belly up then I will be going back to the CRT. I also think that is why I am in a differ about getting a HD box as well as the fact that I am not impressed with the HD quality

Because that is what I'm used to, 480p as dvd, which I don't use anyways.

You must have region 1 DVD's then.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think that's equally true with TV pictures. You'll get a variety of recommendations depending on each persons personal experiences and preferred technology.

FWIW, my own view is that SD can look anything from pants e.g. Freeview high compression channels on LCD - to excellent....say from a well mastered DVD on a decent plasma.

A correctly adjusted reasonable quality TV, whether SD, HD Ready or Full HD, should be able to let you see the difference between a good source and a bad one. Giving the TV a better source such as a HD should result in a better picture. Whether it's a night-and-day difference then depends on the TV technology and how well it is set up.

In the end all you can do is suck it and see. Good luck ”

^^^ This!

Sensible advice for once.

I also agree. I find SD pictures on my plasma are perfect and I will not be changing to HD in the near future.

Before interlacing it has to do some scaling even, gaining even more fun artifacts. I guess the reason he doesn't see much difference is just that, it was a display from when the tv's were just not quite fully baked technology yet...atleast at a reasonable price. For what those things cost you could get a top of the line display today.

Plus they were selling those to people without HD sources in the uk for the most part. So yea not a good screen to compare HD for today. In the last few years plasma has jumped way ahead with resolution/power consumption and price.”

thanks for the thoughts - yes i think it is about that time. One HDMI, and no digital tuner. I thought it was a good deal at the time, but obviously pricves have continued to fall

Subjectively we like the picture - but maybe you are right - perhaps the HD we are seeing is not as good as some HD's!

I can see the difference between Sd and HD, but the difference is not enough to fork out more money. I think the quality is pretty poor to be honest, with the way the BBC and sky go on about the better quality. it may be better, but not by that much.

Blu-ray is far better.

But as I said, once the plasma goes belly up I will be going back to the CRT, the only problem is using a small screen again, but I will cope

Even if you can't tell much difference between Freeview and FreeviewHD with a FullHD TV you'll definitely see the difference between these and HD content on blue-ray.

The difference is very very marked, but you do need the right kit to get the best from HD, even if it isn't the most expensive kit.

Get a £30 HD box from Tesco (suggest you go for their Technika STBHDIS2010 as this should have IPTV options via its Channel Zero functions at some time according to the CZ site)

If it makes no difference, return it.

Simples!

How long is a piece of string?

Some people report that HD looks better than SD on an SD TV - because all the "SD" channels are sub-SD, and the HD channels give them the first "full SD" picture they've ever seen from broadcast TV.

So I'm sure that at least some people will appreciate the improvements of HD over SD on a 1024x576 panel.

Cheers,
David.

My dad just bought one of these boxes.. The HD picture is much better than SD...those saying there is no difference must need their eyes tested lol.

Only thing is the box seems a bit flaky, as others have noted it has already switched itself off into standy 3 times in the first few hours of use. hmmm

You'll see a marked difference in quality between SD and HD freeview regardless of whether the set is 720 or 1080-people who are saying you wont notice on a 720 screen are talking nonsense. Apart from improvements in sharpness the HD feed should remove all the cruddy macro blocking digital artefacts that plague the standard def feed. HD quality varies from programme to programme-many shows are actually just upscaled versions of the standard def feed. When you get something that is in HD you will notice the difference.

I would recommend getting the Humax Freeview HD box over the cheapo £30 supermarket Vestel clone boxes. To my eyes it produces a sharper HD picture than the Vestel boxes-which I suspect are cheap for a reason. If you download the manufacturers firmware upgrade it will also record to a USB hard drive as well.

Which one records to a USB hard drive? I noticed the one we have has a USB port.

Anyway I think they will return it. Its switched to standby about 7 times since this afternoon.

I'm watching the Royal Wedding right now on my 22 inch LG 720p HD ready set and even though the screen size is small I can definitely notice a huge improvement when watching Freeview HD channels over the SD ones. Much sharper and crisp as well as the sound.

So yes I would say 720p is a big improvement even on smaller screens.

Well even 720p youtube looks clearer than sd on a small computer monitor, it just depends how close you are sitting to the screen.
