How great is Alfie!?
Even in moments of sadness and drama he still sticks in a line that makes people laugh- "I'm expecting to walk in there and find Tommy has turned into a kipper!" That just made me crack up! Then he went from that to "this is the part where me and you get happy." What a great actor.

Disagree with both of you I'm afraid- ok maybe he isn't the greatest actor ever, but for the genre he does do a good job and he lightens the tension with much needed humour- every programme needs someone like that

I dont think hes a great actor, but being given the funny lines in an ep like this wouldnt have been easy to execute, & he did well.
I dont think Alfie has been sufficently shocked or distraught in this reveal, but then I guess the focus has been (rightly) on the other 3. TBH Alfies feelings can never be as important in this story as Kats, Jacks & Ronnies. I found the scene with him & the baby (& him begging the social worker for more time) very moving. I totally get why hes been nominated for Best actor over Steve McFadden. Personally Im finding the character of Phil very tired now, he seems to be going through the same old motions now, hes been in the show for many years and the character is dramaticallly exhausted, whereas Kat & alfie are back for a fresh stint, & are revitalised. Shane did some very good work in the baby swap storyline, whereas Steve hasnt had much to work with in the last few months. Overall Steve is a better actor clearly, but perhaps now isnt the time for him, as his character hasnt been involved in any electric plots in recent times... The best actor in EE is jake Wood IMO (with Adam Woodyatt as close 2nd) |

Here in the USA we are just at the point where Alfie is trying to get a divorce paper so he can marry Kat on Christmas day... I am loving seeing this again, while watching BBC1 and seeing a much older Alfie go through break up and emotional ups and downs with Kat...

I don't usually rate Shane Ritchie highly as an actor but I did find his scenes with Tommy very sweet last night.

I agree with your choices. I think the problem is I thought the social worker stuff ridiculous and OTT, ruining what was a moving episode with very "real" situations in Ronnie's interview. To go from Ronnie's interview, which was emotional and raw (rather than OTT) to this ridiculous scenario of a social worker seemingly not waiting for a mother and Kat "running" to the hospital after an OTT performance in the car park just seemed "too much". I loved the ending with the three of them going home (which was emotional and real) and Alfie's chat with Tommy, but I felt the other stuff was a "bit much". Like a mother who found out their son was alive would be drowning their sorrows in the pub
I agree with everything you say. However, I did tear up at the end |

RE Shane/Alfie. I'm not a big fan at all but I really do prefer Alfie doing subtle one liners like that then huge slapstick unfunny comedy like when he pretended to revive that piece of meat as xmas or him dancing in the street or the other week when he put that pie on his head. |

i find him really annoying. to me he never seems to grasp the enormity of the situation & thinks that a few choice words & a joke will make everything better. when he said last night all you have to do is cuddle the baby & feed it etc nothing about her emotions & how she might be feeling.
it was the same when he wanted to go for IVF, lets have another baby & make it all better. forget about what happened before. he's just too simplistic. |

I find him quite endearing. A welcome relief from many of the miserables who currently inhabit the Square.

He's better than he was the last time around but not convincing for me. Can't get past the Daz challenge, if he was a decent actor that would have been long forgotten.
Jessie deserves a better 'husband'. If things had been different (and yes I know the timing doesn't work) but it would have been good to see her paired with Max. |
