I see there are so many threads about long serving and short staying soap characters, so I came up with the idea for this thread. I simply don't see how just because someone is a particularly long serving actor in a soap, makes them any more important to the show as some of the newer characters.
I've no doubt Ken Barlow is a Coronation Street legend, but there are newer characters who've made just as impact and good storylines.....
The Wyldes of Emmerdale only stayed for the best part of 2 years, but they certainly made an impact on the show!!!

With Emmerdale (Farm), the way people apply this theory makes it sound like an entirely different soap....
It seems just because Amos & Wilks no longer manage The Woolpack; Sam Pearson, Henry Wilks, Seth Armstrong have died; Annie & Amos retired to Spain; both Matt & Dolly moved to Norfolk; the original farmhouse collapsed due to subsidence; what was the Sugdens last farm is now under new management, as is The Woolpack; the village of Beckindale has been renamed Emmerdale; there's been an air disaster; and several other characters have moved into the village, which is not uncommon for people to do so........
people label Emmerdale Farm and Emmerdale as 2 separate programmes when in fact they're not, it was renamed Emmerdale to give the show a more up-to-date feel and to give the programme makers an opportunity to up the number of locations used, making the show more village based.......

That said, I think Alan Turner & Eric Pollard are absolute legends of Emmerdale, and even if they left which I hope won't be anytime soon, they'd still be fondly remembered, just like Amos & Wilks, Sam Pearson, Seth Armstrong, Annie, etc........

....and I also remember Brian Park getting a lot of stick during his time at Coronation Street, I know he wrote out a few characters, but it's survived without them and they're still fondly remembered....
