I've just had a look at my so called 'location tracking'. I was hoping it might be more interesting than this; that I'd be able to see a history of where I've been over the past 2 years. But alas not.

Apparently, unless my phone has been sneaking off by itself while I sleep, I've been to towns and cities I've never in my life been to. And also, bizarrely, I've never been anywhere near my house. Or work. Or my girlfriend's house. Or my parents' house.

I don't know exactly what this thing is supposed to be for, but it sure as hell isn't for tracking my location. Another sensationalist story blown out of proportion? Surely not!
And i just the other day looked at my dads and sisters at their request and it pinpointed them pretty much exactly as it has pretty much everyone else.

So not quite sure why yours is like that, but to say its another story blown out the water is silly.

Just had a look at this out of curiosity. Mine is pretty accurate. I'd forgotten how much of the UK my job takes me to!

Doesn't seem to have logged anything from America when I had location services turned off though.

EDIT: Just having a closer look, and it doesn't seem particularly accurate within towns and cities. I tried to choose places I've been to only once, and sometimes the location data is showing up ten miles from where I've actually been. That said, the overall picture clearly shows where I've been in general.

From what I can tell, it keeps a log of the locations of cell towers and wifi hotspots you have used, so if you keep wifi off it will only track the cell towers - and in rural areas they will often be miles from where you actually are.

iOS 4.3.3 has been released to stop this location database on the IPhone keeping the data for so long also the data is no longer backed up via ITunes like with earlier versions of iOS 4.

Good of apple to indirectly admit they were wrong. Surprised Jobs didnt say, just turn the phone of if you dont want it logging where you are.

Think I will skip this, caching cell tower location doesn't really bother me.

I'm tempted to give this one a skip to every iOS Version increment of 4.3 seems to bring another iPhone bug to the surface for Apple to fix.
