Well worth watching if it is on again, this Freudian Western also stars Walter Huston as Barbara's father, in his last role.
Thanks for sharing and i love Witness To Murder one of my favourites and i shall have to check out that other film.

I finally caught up with Dial M For Murder - what a cracking film. Great acting, script, pacing, and camera work (particularly in the scene where Ray Milland first meets Anthony Dawson). Grace Kelly is so classy and beautiful as well. I love black and white but Grace Kelly's blue eyes (and dresses by Edith Head) in colour are something special.

It's a cliche but I realy do think Hitchcock was ahead of his time. He could have made great films in any era.

Time to dig Rear Window out again ...

I haven't saw Dial M for Murder but it is on my "to watch list" I love Hitchcock's work, have you ever saw Stage Fright? Marlene Dietrich is in it.

I keep meaning to pick it up. Apparently it's much better and more honest) than her autobiography. There's this antique shop in Wolverhampton that had some books on her so I picked a bio up on her, still not got around to reading it yet though. Dietrich was a fascinating lady though.

Sad news about Celeste Holm passing away yesterday. I only watched All About Eve recently and her charm and warmth worked really well as a counterpoint to the feisty Margo and manipulative Eve.

I stumbled across some pretty cool old radio broadcasts on youtube - there are loads of 30 minute broadcasts of Suspense Radio, with players such as Joan Bennett, Joan Crawford, Jimmy Stewart, Dana Andrews, William Bendix, Dan Duryea (what a heel this guy was - love him), Eddie Robinson, Cagney, Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, Lucille Ball, Rosalind Russell and lots more.

Here are a few links but just search for suspense radio if anyone is interested. Some of them are a bit light on plot but they work for the format - just a quick 30 minute story with a star and a few supporting players. Nice to see a different side of some of the classic stars anyway.

I have many of the Lux Radio Broadcasts that Barbara Stanwyck appeared on. Cecil B de Mille was the man in charge, and as Barbara was such a favourite of his she did more than any other actress. Not only did she do broadcasts of her own films like The Lady Eve, Double Indemnity and Sorry, Wrong Number, but she also go the chance to play roles that she missed out on screen.

She did Dark Victory in 1938, in the hope that Warners would buy it for her, they bought it, but gave it to Bette Davis their long term contract star. She also played Cathy in Wuthering Heights, and played opposite her husband Robert Taylor in Waterloo Bridge and Smilin' Through. She also appeared on her friend Jack Benny's Show many times, and displayed her great flair for comedy that unfortunately she never got to do again on screen after 1946.

I remember Joan saying at the NFT lecture,

"I married first, won the Oscar first, and if I die first she'll undoubtedly be livid because I beat her to it."

Even at their mother Lilian's memorial service they did not speak to each other. When it came to scattering the ashes, Olivia, ever the actress, gave a very dramatic, theatrical, deep chested sigh as she threw the ashes. Joan very characteristically, just tossed them away.

Lilian's death snapped the thread between Olivia and Joan forever. They never forgave each other for what each took to be the other's intolerable behaviour at the time.

Joan would seldom comment on her sister, and wrote of her contemptuously in her memoirs, No Bed of Roses, which was retitled No Grain of Truth by Joan's ex husband.
I'm going to have to read some books on them, what do you suggest is the best to start with?

I also love Bette Davis, I love the film - The Man Who Came to Dinner, a brilliant film, Monty Woolley is fab in this role.

I have some great bigraphy's on Bette, some of my favourites are,

The Passionate Life of Bette Davis by Lawrence J. Quirk,

No Guts, No Glory by Whitney Stine

Bette and Joan - The Divine Feud by Shaun Considine

All About Bette, Her Life from A to Z by Randall Riesse

and if you are a fan of All About Eve, you will love

All About All About Eve by Sam Staggs
