Well Philips tend to be junk, Toshiba are usually badged Samsung.s anyway, but Panasonic is the best of those manufacturers.

Sony?

So stupid they released some dvd recorders without a DIVIDE feature for the hard disc drive.

Swiftly withdrawn though.
Idiots

I suppose at least most of them now can record on both + and - discs. I bought my DVD recorder in 2004 and only the Sony's could record on both. So that's why i opted for a Sony which i don't regret because it is still now working perfectly.

But not -RW(VR) or RAM

I ended up with an HXD870 after my brother spotted 2 Sonys in a local charity shop over Christmas. I had one and he had the other (an HXD970, same machine but with larger 250gb hard drive fitted).

They were brand new 'ex display', donated from a local Currys store. No boxes, but with leads and manuals. They still had the Sony spec / advert cards stuck on the top.

They probably cleared them out as the remotes have 'Guide Plus' printed across them, an EPG service which was about to end on these machines. They work fine on the alternative 'standard' EPG though.

Might be a model the OP could consider, unless Nigel comes back with a warning on reliability issues!.

So far I'm very pleased with it, and for the £40-each price tag, even more so!

If I'm buying a TV I tend to go for Sony.

If I'm buying a DVD recorder I would always got for Panasonic. imo they are far ahead of the rest.

I'd definately recommend one with a hard disk. I recently archived a few videos (mostly old achademy awards that I'd recorded over the years) to DVD and it makes things so much easier.
Set DVDR to record, switch VCR to play, leave for a few hours, then edit the content before copying to disk.

Have a look on the Dixons site before buying. I bought mine from there at a very reasonable price.

If being multiregion is important to the OP he won't get a MR Panasonic from Dixons.
He would need to buy from a specialist or he could spend £10 later on buying the required gizmo from ebay

The machine I have here says it records / plays -RW(VR), but not RAM.

Same here. I often use -RW in VR mode for editing.

Who would want RAM anyway?, it was never a popular format, mostly Panasonics with a tiny few others.

Thats good then.
-RW(VR) is redundant anyway if you have a hard drive.

Many recent recorders still don't record to RAM (except Panasonic) but they will play them

I never bought into RAM but in the days before hard drive recorders RAM blew the other formats away with its editing abilities, although -RW(VR) was as clever.

However if you don't have a hard drive recorder then RAM would be a godsend , providing you could use it in your PC to transfer your final edit to -R or +R

There are others uses for rewritable discs.
