Blu-Ray Problem
Tapner

Hey. I'm hoping to get some help with a Blu-Ray issue if possible please.

We recently bought the new Narnia film on Blu-Ray and went to watch it last night downstairs on my parents Blu-Ray player. The film kept getting stuck on the first screen that displays some information about updating your player for newer films, and the player was making strange noises. I updated the drivers and firmware from the LG website, but that made no difference. We then thought it could be a faulty disc because when we skipped the film forward, it will freeze. However, the disc runs perfectly fine on my Blu-Ray player upstairs. Also, my parents player plays other Blu-Ray's including Unstoppable which only came out recently with no trouble. The players are of a similar age.

I'm pretty confused as to what the problem could be as I feel as though I've tried everything. We're thinking of taking the disc back, but I assume they test it in store and if it works surely they won't exchange it?

Thanks.

It might be worth googling for the specific model of your parent's player to see if it is a known problem. Ideally you'd need to try it on an identical LG player.

Bear in mind that it only been out a short while so LG maybe unaware - you do get these compatibility issues with blu-rays

Alright, I'll try that.

Thanks very much for your help.

Panasonic is the only brand of player I know that has never required any firmware updates to enable playback of specific discs.

Their players have had a few updates to speed up features but unlike the PS3 , Sony , Pioneer and every other brand of player Panny has never had playback issues with any discs - even Avatar.

Despite some peope falling for the PR the LG brand is a budget brand and budget brands of all kinds including Samsung have turned out to have compatibility problems more than other brands.

At least LG offer updates.
If you bought the supermarket cheapie from Curtis and found some Disney discs you could not play aswell as others you were stuffed as no updates have ever been made available

Manufacturers update firmware to sort out glitches on specific films, so the release date isn't really a guide to playability. Blu-ray films are more like computer programmes than videos. So having a later film that plays OK just means the programme is different.

As Hardeep suggests, do a Google search based on your model of player and the film to see if anyone else is having trouble. Also try the LG site. It may be that LG are working on a fix.

I have a Sony and a panasonic blu ray player and they have both played everything I've thrown at them so far. Admittedly I use the Sony player a lot more. I've heard so many stories about LG and samsung players not playing certain discs, I don't think I'd buy a player of that make.

Some Sony players required updates to play Avatar

To be fair , its the only time I've read about Sony players refusing outright to play a disc before an update.

Even the PS3 had a glitch with a Star Trek disc , albeit only a problem with a menu and swiftly sorted with an OTA update within a day or two
